What do you think about the "Open Console" experiment?
So, 2 fully open source consoles are being released this year.
The $100 Ouya:
Which is an android 5 based game system with 8GB storage and 1GB Ram. (Trust me, ive got a dev unit and its awesome).
And the console that actually looks like a game console, but we barely know much about, the $100 Oton:
The oton runs linux, and will be designed with a special core to allow running windows, linux and windows games out of the box. The oton also will have around 3GB Ram and 1GB Video.
So, what do you think of the ongoing push to get consoles open source?

Re: What do you think about the "Open Console" experiment?
Open game consoles allow developers to freely release a game on their terms, unlike playstation, nintendo and xbox where you must pay a license fee and split half income with the publisher.
One of the biggest reasons my fan games are ouya exclusive.

Re: What do you think about the "Open Console" experiment?
Yep ^
And not trash ones like 90% of the android games being released on android that are ad crazy. With ouya, its required your game has some free element, and no ads. I would highly, i mean, REALLY, highly, recommend getting one.
Ive got a dev model at the moment and plan to pick up a later retail in june. Its a good console. Stable, quick, and ive seen some very impressive prototypes in the dev center.
Theres even ports of some high quality games coming too.
Slender the arrival, final fantasy 3, and a few more are gettings ouya ports.

That actually sounds amazing. Open source ... less ads.
It sounds like a promising experiment.

Re: What do you think about the "Open Console" experiment?
It will be great for us fangame creators. Since its still got an android license, fangames can be published without issues if its free.
Which is why my croc game will be exclusive to ouya, and possibly oton.

If there's no DRM and no integrated payment system to simplify purchases, it probably won't become big and mainstream anytime soon.
