Re: Gimp

I actually just got it like a month ago, and I still don't know how to operate it, so I'm kind of useless. tongue

Re: Gimp

File --> New

and then decide whatever size you want, i assume you don't need a giant image to make Spyrix, so the default size on my version is 640x480 apparently, that might be good.

go to the toolbox, then use the pencil or paintbrush or the thing that looks like a pen squirting water, which is apparently the "airbrush".

to change colors, click on the black rectangle in the middle of the toolbox.

Re: Gimp

Okay. So GIMP is something we call a Bitmap Editor; a group of tools used to create and edit bitmaps (images made out of pixels). It is the exact same type of program as Photoshop, and while they are both capable of creating sprite images from scratch, this is not their specialty. Nor is it a good idea to use it for that purpose when there are better options out there.

I would definitely suggest you try a dedicated sprite editor such as ASE, Pickle, or Raptor's Editor. Each of these are applications that are dedicated to sprite editing and only sprite editing. Whichever one you pick is your preference.

If you want to stay with GIMP, then go right ahead. However, it won't be any easier than using Paint in this case, so keep that in mind as you start working with it. But it's still pretty straightforward:

  • Go to File->New. Give the sprite a name and set the size in pixels, preferably a power of two such as 16, 32, 64, or 128.

  • On the 'Layers' window, double click the 'Background' tab and select OK. This unlocks the background layer.

  • Now you can use the eraser to get rid of the white background (unless you planned for your sprite to have a white background.

  • Select the pencil tool if you want rigid lines, or the brush tool if you want soft lines.

  • Start drawing!

More specific? Are you trying to make a 16x16 static sprite? Are you trying to make a 128x128 animated sprite? Are you trying to make some sort of tile map?

Give me an example of the type of graphics you want to make. Do they look like a Pokémon sprite? Do they look like a modern full-blown animation?

I'm sorry. I can't help you. You're going to need to be very specific if you want the right tool for the job..

Re: Gimp

Bloody newfangled technology. In my day, gimp was a derogatory term equatable to freak. Weird how they'd name a program/application/bloody technological thingymabob that.

Re: Gimp

Here's what I usually do: draw your character on paper first and then use a scanner to get it into a file that you can edit on GIMP. Try to use smooth lines when you draw. Once you have your file, open it in GIMP and turn the contrast up enough that the lines look completely black and the background looks completely white. Then you can color it in with the paint bucket tool. If your colors are bleeding through the lines, try looking for holes in your lines that color could be escaping through. Resize it when you're done; this should fix any minor mistakes or roughness with your lines.

Too add on to this, if you're using a mouse, then I highly recommend using the curve turn to get smooth curls. I usually use a size 3 brush when I use gimp then make the line art with the curve tool. Don't use the default setting in the curve tool and change it so it acts like what you want to use, pencil brush etc. Then stroke all the lines until done. Then color it in when satisfied with the line art.
