Re: Old Music vs. New Music

Do you think you're the only one who has listened to a lot of metal and actually pays attention to the music? We're on the same boat here

Nope.
I'm stubborn as a mule when it comes to debating about music.
Because I know what is what.

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

So do I, but fyi, did you know that all these "fake" genres were started by all your "real" metal bands. Black Sabbath started black metal, Iron Maiden started power metal, Metallica started thrash metal, etc.

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

there's no such thing as "black metal", "power metal", or "trash metal".

I don't see why people need to try to sound smart and have a milion "subgenres".

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

What age are you from? Stop living in the past and get grips with reality here, cuz you're dilusional. I dare you to go to a death metal band and say they're not metal, in fact I'll send you a link.

I'm not lying, I haven't lied on this forum if I was lying I would've said that I was the musician when clearly I'm not. Could you prove that I'm lying? You can even ask my brother yourself.

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

Asking me if I'm a musician isn't going to prove anything; just because some people are in the music business doesn't make them any smarter than some people that aren't in it.

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

@Aicebo

Good reply BUT you are stating that  "real" metal HAS to be poppy like Whitesnake. I am a metal head, and have been most of my life. The original heavy metal band was Black Sabbath, so if you want to make parallels, make it with them. Most of the metallers INCLUDING old school metallers who CO-FOUNDED metal with Sabbath (ie Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Deep Purple etc) denounced "pop" or "glam" metal - the metal you are claiming is the only "real" metal - as FAKE because it has no soul - THE FOUNDATION OF METAL. Heavy metal is more than just genres, it is an entire subculture. If you were a musician I would be able to have a decent debate with you about your denouncement of metal, which is why I asked. But it seems that you are, as I feared, just somebody who is ignorantly foisting their tastes onto other people claiming you know what it's about.  My dear, you have no idea what metal is, so I suggest you WIKI it, and learn a thing or two about it before you continue to make an *bleep* of yourself. In the mean time, don't claim to "know what is what." You clearly do not.

Jono

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

I never said it HAD to be, I said MOST. Learn to read. Please and thank you.

Wikipedia is a lame resource to give, btw.

Again, just because I'm not a musician doesn't mean that I don't know as much. I know as much or possibly more than you. Kthnx.

I'm done with this conversation, as I'm tired of repeating myself. Goodbye.

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

Unlikely that you know more than me, I have made it a personal point to study the history of the music that makes up most of my life. Did you know that the "fake" guitar solo, growling metal bands grew off of Sabbath and old school punk? The growling reflects the subject of these bands, the rather atonal solos are chaotic for whatever reasons they have, but saying they're fake is more insulting you than it is them. That is, if you are talking about proper black/death/extreme metal bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Meshuggah, etc and not the crappy metalcore/deathcore rubbish like Suicide Silence and the like who are TRYING to be real metal. Yes, Wiki is a lame resource, but it's better than saying "watch kerrang tv lol," cos they ARE playing lame -core music... If you had as much musical knowledge as you say you do, we probably wouldn't be arguing... Thrash, death, black, prog, all the subgenres exist for a reason, and makes them as much a part of metal as traditional metal. Not so sure about glam though... Over popularising metal almost killed it in many peoples opinions. The argument of musicianship is more to draw parallels in argument, not undermine you... Two musicians arguing can come to a quicker conclusion than if one or both parties are not musicians, simply because of shared insight... I don't mean to be rude, but ignorance is a pet hate of mine. That said, while I know more than many people I know about particularly metal music, I full know that I don't know everthing. I just get VERY annoyed with people who claim that they do.

Yes, my blood pressure is back down, and I am attepting to be more objective than argumentative.

tl;dr - Metal subgenres have just as much right to be called real metal as oldschool traditional metal. With the possible exception of anything ending in "core," cos nobodly likes a poser...

Re: Old Music vs. New Music

I did not respond to the poll because I felt that the question was inadequate enough to provide a fair choice on what genres throughout multiple eras I liked. It'd be better if the poll options were less broad and more specific to a certain era or group of music genres.
