Re: Anyone hate the original games?
Well at least you make a point in showing that you do lol....like it matters in the end anyways. They will continue it most likely....and unless someone takes the character from Sierra I don't see things changing.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't aiming specifically at you

I think that's pretty obvious sherlock.
Oh, and I still dont get what is so perfect about the "free" flight in DOTD!

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
^ are you serious? were you not ever tired of having a pair of useless wings that you could only flap once and only be able to temporarily glide?
Anyone with common sence should know that Dragons "Are Supposed to be able to fly...."
and besides, tell me that didn't add a totally awesome element to the game? being able to fly through those awesome environments?

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
no, I'd prefer it if you could glide throughout the game and free flight could be an unlockable after the game. Besides, I recon that free flight really wrecks the platforming, or if it doesn't, like in DOTD, it's just awkward instead. It really depends who you are.

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
I mean, yeah, I was waiting for a free flight game too, just not the kind of game that DOTD was

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
With the type of deadlines that crew has to make the games, the whole "free flight" thing was just a dumb gimmick. Only companies with real time and effective crews should take on the whole "fly anywhere you want" thing because it requires extensive level design. (notice how not many games do it) Of course Sierra didn't have the means for this level design so they just threw on some annoying invisible barriers and called the whole thing "free flight." Thus, it was useless and just there to look pretty, or if I want to say it in a nicer way, it was just "advanced gliding."

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
I don't think what you're saying is proper
Take Star Fox, for the N64, that game was all about freedom of flight, and yet each level has its own set of boundaries (invisible or not)
what you forget, is that a level cannot be never ending, take for example the dam, how would ou go about setting up visible boundaries without making the entire Setting inacurate?
Freedom of flight was intended from the very begining of the game, its not something Sierra just slapped there on the last minute just to look pretty.

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
I prefer both series to be honest, anyway we wouldn't have TLOS if we didn't have the originals, so we have insomniac to thank for that otherwise spyro wouldn't of existed without the original games.

Think it over
Star Fox had no freedom of flight; you had a certain route you were forced to go into. You could not go lower and higher than how the game wanted you to in a very small amount of space. It was never advertised as a game with "free flight" because it was a scrolling shooter, not a platformer nor adventure game.
The dam was just another example of the unfitting level design that had nothing to do with "free flight." The boundaries for trying to leave the area are understandable, but your height restriction is another. Basically, the characters can fly but you have to go through all that fighting and simple puzzle-solving to reach the top? Again, the flying succumbs to only being "advanced gliding" because it's only useful for staying a few feet off the ground for a while.
Just because they planned the "flying" before they began game production doesn't mean it isn't a gimmick. Sonic being a werewolf was planned from the beginning and it was still a gimmick. When it creates the illusion of being a groundbreaking point in the game but is really just completely unnecessary and there to attract attention, that's when it's considered one.

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
you forget multiplayer mode, or the boss battles. yes the part about height restraints I sort of do agree with, then again, if you had total freedom, it would take away from the experiences the game wants you to go through...
I do not believe it a gimmic however, Dragons are supposed to be able to fly, it was bound to happen sooner or later

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
Yes, but it kind of breaks with the tradition of the old ones that spyro can't fly, only glide, yes i know it was annoying, but its what gave the game character and soul.

And again you like making big deals out of situations that don't matter. If it was so obvious then show me where I was aiming it at her by all means....seeing as how I was implying that no matter what we say the entire situation is not in our hands. Seriously, don't say it if you know it's gonna start a conflict....and open your mind to something that might have more to it.
The flight is far from perfect.

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
I love freeflight, although that does sound like another good idea to have it as unlockable.
I do know of some good games though w/ freeflight, although I cant quite remember them all too well since I havent played a game w/ that in years because I was too busy on the computer and playing fighting games instead.

Who would hate the original games? They're classic! I don't even know why there's a thread for this!
I love both Tlos and the originals!

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
...This topic seemed to be asking for trouble with its title, nice to see things have remained civil.
hmm, I still can't make any judgement regarding the originals... still need to play them, but from what my friend has told me they sound like fun.
Oh great, my lighthouse is on fire again, be right back...

Re: Anyone hate the original games?
^Friendly warning, be careful about breaking the old v. new argument open again.
I haven't had much exposure to the originals beyond watching a friend play, so I don't have an opinion on the old stuff myself.
What will happen if we break the 'old v. new argument'?
