Original Spyro Games Are Made With What?
Hey guys, Hurricos here, I just wanted to ask some of you who has some knowledge of the type of programs used in video games. I checked Insomniacs job list and it seems that they use programs like:
Autodesk Maya
MediaWiki
Photoshop
Illustrator
MS-Office or similar (MS Word, Excel, Visio, Project etc)
3DMax
XSI
3D Studio
Softimage
UnrealEd Editor e.g., UnrealEd, QERadiant, Hammer
Combustion
Flash
Alienbrain
Scripting (e.g., LUA, Python, Unreal Script etc.)
And they also have poeple who are really good with the C++ programs, especially relating to unit testing and testing automation.
Now, Spyroforums, what do ye know about this? Eh?
One question though, what's an MMO?

MMO stands of Massive Multiplayer Online.
A majority of these programs are for art and programming work. Not at all surprising. Generally companies compile their files into a their own custom file so that they are in a finished, and for the most part, difficult to tamper with, state.

Thanks for the info. Loneknight but do you know what is a STR file? They always seem to have the icon of a Computer with the pic. of the earth in the background too. I've been trying to find a way to crack that one...

MediaWiki? Why would they use a wiki system to make a game? I am sure they have storyboards or something.

I know that a lot of companies have their own custom files, so that's what this STR file could be. If you want to crack it, google around for some information on it.

STR is short of "string". Could be text data, or some audio of some sort. Thats all I can say if the extension is logical.

MediaWiki is probably just for development discussion or something.
And of course Maya is good for 3D modeling, but it's expensive and there's an open source program called Blender that does similar things and is starting to get more popular.
I don't know what Combustion and Alienbrain do though.
But yeah, I can see why they'd use C++. That's one of the most popular and powerful programming languages around. I'm going to try and learn it, actually.

If that's what your thinking, then just start off in a computer based class that'll help you learn the basics and what not (Best to start as early as possible). Then work your way up to the more difficult challenges, such as cereating a website, condtructing your own images with photo shop, and doing CGI and C++ along with other tech used in making gamesand advertising games.

I'd be able to make my own game if I just knew how to work out Autodesk Maya and C++. I was in Visual Arts class that used the Visual Basics Program but it only lasted a couple of months before the school decided to shut it down because they were running low on math teachers. ><

Good luck on that man im with you in this field.
Seems i cant do it at all because the closest college for it is 6 hours 1 way.
So it looks like i got to get un lazy and do it on my freaking own little by little.
I see tutorials all over for Maya and 3dsMax, But the ide is so hard to get used to it makes you over whelmed and you stop.
Now i did learn to use "Radiant" a model cad in Medal of Honor Allied Assault a few years back and made maps. It was like using 3dsmax, But more user friendly. It was getting great until i lost my modeling partners. This happens allot with online friends :S.
