Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

Today, I found an article about Sony patent for advertisements. What do you think about it? I think it is not good way to go...

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

not sure if Sony wants people to buy products, or stop playing video games.

either way, i'm sure the companies that will be advertising will be getting a LOT more business than Sony in the coming days!

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

In before everyone starts their "What is happening to gaming" rant:

These kinds of patents come up all the time. Rarely, if ever do they actually come to life. Patents are cheap to file, and if a company gets an idea they will file it even if they have no plan at all to use it. While it is possible that it may lead into some PS4 games, the chance of this happening is so low that I would find it ridiculous people would get riled up already.

TL;DR - You can't get upset every time one of these patents come out.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

Hopefully you're right. If I've already paid $60 for a game, I really don't want to see them trying to sell me more stuff. I already bought your product, guys, now leave me alone!

Doesn't Microsoft do this with Xbox LIVE now anyway? Whenever I see it for myself I always see it cluttered with ads.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

Why not charge companies to make free DLC with product-placement?  Game company gets advertisement money, and the players get free DLC of an IRL product they might like.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

If i pay for the game i'd like to play it without pauses and advertising. If the game is free pauses are still annoying but more acceptable.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

If it was just for free games then it could be acceptable (or if you want just try that game before buying), but it depends on when it will show up. It could totaly destroy good atmosphere if it was played in a wrong time. It can also confuse player when playing for example some racing game. ( I can't imagine playing audiosurf with adds (I know it is for pc, but just for example) )
So they should be careful when implementing it.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

I've played sports games that have advertising in it, a lot of it is fake, lol.  Or if anyone has ever seen loading screens and advertising on grand theft auto games, you can see how they could easily change it.  I don't see any immediate distastefulness.  I mean, I've played Nascar games, and nascar is nothing but advertising and sponsers anyway.

Now, annoying pupups that make me sit through crap that keeps me from playing the game?  That would annoy me, but I don't think that is going to happen for games that you've paid for.  Unless they make that the incentive for playing a game online.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

i feel like the gaming industry should enter an almost anarchist state, where these corporations just fade out and the dedicated-enough gamers are left to create their own games and independently sell them at $55,050.99 or whatever video games go for these days.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

I don't care what anyone says. If I see an ad on a game I bought, and it
interrupts my gameplay, I'm going to break the disk. I'd rather program my
own super cheesy video game than play that.

Games already have hidden ads in them, such as how Homefront had actual
Hooters and White Castle buildings in the campaign and multiplayer maps.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

If they did it in loading screens or something that doesn't interrupt the gameplay, it wouldn't really bother me; it would just seem tacky if I'd already paid for the game.

It would be ok if it was in loading screens, but wouldn't they increase loading times just for the adds?

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

Yeah, that's what I would be worried about. Some games loading times are already awful; I wouldn't want to see them even worse AND have to watch shameless advertising.

Like others said, I think it would be fine for free games to have ads, but if I paid $60 for a game, I don't want to be constantly bombarded by more things I should spend my money on. Hopefully game companies are smart enough to stay away from this...

why do people always have to advertise things anyway, right? nobody who can afford to fill advertising space in mass-produced video games actually needs the monetary benefits of having their product's name plastered there. when did business almost exclusively become a rusty structure of various companies acting like duct tape to each other?

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

The reason we know about a lot of the products we're familiar with is because they've spent a huge amount on advertising. We might not realize it, but if companies like, say, Coca-Cola, never did any advertising, a lot of people might never buy their products. I'd probably just assume they were just some off-brand and probably aren't as good as one of their competitors that did spend money on advertising. I would guess that if they stopped advertising, newer generations would not grow up with the brand loyalties and biases we have now, which would hurt their sales.

Since mass communication existed. Radio, Television, etc.

We may not like it, but that's how it works today.

Re: Sony Patent Pauses Games for Advertising

I was told by a reputable friend that this patent has been developed since 2006, and that it really shouldn't have any affect on games that we pay for regularly.  It sounds like this is more about the pay-to-play systems or for playing free games through their PSN servers.  But the point is that the patent was being put in place since before PSN was even up, so it should have no affect on us now, at until the next generation.  Even then, I don't expect for the $60 content we buy in disc form.
