Going into Game Design
http://www.fullsail.edu/degrees/game-de … rs/courses
Before I changed my degree plan, I was planning on majoring in Music
Business. But I thought about it a lot and wrestled with myself a lot, and
realized that Music Business isn't something I'd like to do. Plus, Music
Business does not gurantee me a well-paying job.
I decided to follow a plan called Game Design/Development. If I go this
route, I'd be taking courses about C++, OpenGL, DirectX, Windows
Programming, etc. And if I graduate, I will be able to [or I believe I will be
able to] create video games, including game engines.
The university is called Full Sail University located in Florida. It's expensive,
yes; but if I get a nice job at a gaming company, that money will come back
to me over time. [DICE?]
I'm already beginning to dream about making a fan-made Spyro game.

Re: Going into Game Design
The downside: it will cost $70,000 or more. Holy crap.
Aside from that, I figured I'd let you guys know and tell you that I might be
able to work on something relating to Spyro in a few years. It'll take a hell of
a lot of work and motivation, but I believe I can do it. It will also be hard to
find a job, but I am sure I can work that out. By the way, I'll be a part of
this forum as long as it exists.
Hmm ... Spyro The Dragon HD sounds nice.

Re: Going into Game Design
Good luck Swaffy follow your dreams and you will succeed. And Latias I like that idea. I mean if God of War and Sly Cooper can have their own collection released all in one why not Spyro?

Re: Going into Game Design
Well, the remaking of Halo 1 gave me the idea of having the original 3 Spyro
games having an HD remake. It's only something I hope on doing in the future.
After TLoS and Skylanders, Spyro needs a good revive.
[I'm not hating on TLoS, I actually like that series. But it largely deviated from the original Spyro games.]

Agreed.
All the games that were classic but low in graphics need a kick back up with 1080hp and they'll be good again!

Re: Going into Game Design
I looked up the school and it looks like for game design it's going to cost you a total of $77,500 for 5.25 semesters. That does seem like a lot, but per semester it's only $15,500, which is not really that much, but probably could be a little cheaper somewhere else.
Still, you will NOT want to be paying back $77,500 in loans as soon as you graduate. Plug that amount into this loan calculator and (estimating the interest rate) you'll see that, even if you pay almost $900 every month for ten years, you'll end up paying over $100,000 instead of the original $77,500 due to accumulating interest. I don't know how presigious that school is or how good it will look on a degree, but if it won't give you enough financial aid to cover a good portion of your tuition, I'd recommend finding a different school or applying for a lot of private scholarships. You'll be in huge trouble if you can't find a job right away after you graduate, and even if you do, $900 per month is a lot. Also, if you don't live in Florida or near Florida, you'll have to factor transportation into your expenses.
I'm not trying to discourage you; in fact I think if that's what you want to you should go ahead and do it. But definitely see if there's any way you can lower the costs. Good luck.
(And also, from my experience, programming classes can get pretty tough, so don't worry too much if your grades aren't as good as they used to be. Apparently employers don't really care much about your GPA after you graduate anyway.)

Re: Going into Game Design
That is my main worry, Stormy. The cost. Our house costed less than that.

Re: Going into Game Design
Try creating ideas and then pitch them to a game company or something. Or make a game with some friends (Unreal 3 devkit is free now). Sell that original game you make, and get income for college.
Yo, Spyro
I'm really happy for you, but Jazz Jackrabbit is one of the best platformers of all time.

Definitely do NOT use Unreal if you are planning on making money off of anything. It will end up costing more than your college itself.

All they need to do is upgrade the graphics a little bit and fix some of the bugs. That's pretty much it. The thing we need though. Is a company that won't *bleep* up everything. I recommend either Suda 51 or Atlus Swaffy.
