Re: iPods
Sure, not everyone likes iPods, but even if you don't, they're great to have on long car trips if your parents like to listen to music that you absolutely DESPISE. My parents, whenever we take long car trips, they'll play Bruce Springsteen music on their iPod through the speakers in the car, so I just switch my iPod on to drown out their music with the type I want to hear.

Re: iPods
I don't like the fact people change the word "MP3 Player" for "iPod" now.
An iPod is a brand of mp3 player. Recently with a new firmware upgrade, ipods are stuck syncing with itunes. I despise itunes and the itunes format.
Can iPods even play mp3s, or only the apple itunes format? (I mean directly putting it on the iPod, not running it though itunes first)

Did you mind "Walkman" and "Discman", names of mp3 players of the past?

No, you need to put the mp3 on iTunes first. Really, it's not that much of a hassle, considering that in the past, you would have to burn mp3s onto a CD before being able to play them on your mp3 player! Plus that, ipods are a lot easier to carry than clunky Walkmans and the like. And storage capabilities are a lot less restricted than, say, putting 12 four-minute songs on a single CD.
How do you prefer to listen to music anyways?

"Walkman" and "Diskman" were not solid state music players, so you cannot compare the two. I am talking about the diskless solid state mp3 players out now.
I hate running stuff though anything in order to play it. I'm pretty sure itunes converts your music it its own format, then copies it over to your iPod. My brother had an ipod, but he lost it.
I Have a Archos 604 Wifi PMP. Music, video, pictures, tv, internet, everything. It pwn3s any iPod. Plus, I don't need to run anything though a converter before I can play it, and it supports divx movies, wma, wmv, mp3, jpeg, mov, and a lot more formats. Just drag, drop, play.
Apple DRM locks all their stuff, thats another reason why you can no longer sync your ipod with any linux distribution, because apple locked it to itunes, and itunes doesn't run on linux.

I've did a little bit of research on this product you've told me about, and it looks pretty darn - umm, full of features (gimmicky? >.>). For the most part though, I think the average person prefers to omit all the bells and whistles of internet access, recording TV shows, and even watching videos (really, use your tv). Most people only want to hear songs on the go - ya know, on the bus or something while they head off to work.
As far as price is concerned, I'll stick with my ipod nano. Supposedly, the Archos 604 is $450 US at retail price. Similarly, the ipods with video capabilities and loaded GB memory have high prices that I don't find that attractive.
Then again, I don't really have the mindset of a person going nuts for gimmicks, so I'll spend my half a grand elsewhere. That's just me.
About iTunes converting mp3s to a different format it uses - you're probably right about that. IMO, running a program like iTunes ain't that bad.

Re: iPods
I just got an RCA OPAL MP3 it has 2GB, which is enough for me. It can also play movies, but really, If I wanted movies I would get one with a bigger screen. anyway, it was an x-mas present, and you don't even need to sync it, just drag it into it's folder and you're ready to go. also, the earbuds are removable silicone things, which is good cuz then I can wash them periodically plus, It's A LOT cheaper than an iPod. Which is why I asked for it. Seriously, when you are buying an iPod or Zune, you're just buying the name. Same with an iPhone. because they have TONS of other cell phones coming out every week, and there are a good handful that can do just as much as an iPhone, just without the name and price. My theology is this, why pay so much more for something, when you can get the SAME DARN THING at less than HALF the cost?

Re: iPods
Spyrorocks, Yes you're device seems pretty pimp but I don't think it pwns ALL ipods. My new iPod touch can do all the things that your machine can do and more.
Cynder Rules, Yes it does seem stupid at first but no phine is as advanced as iPhone right now. It also has brand name, people recognize the symbol "i" before the name so they know it is a good product. Even if you get a device that can do as much as iPhone, it could be an off brand theorfore not as reliable. People go for market leader names like: Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Nintendo etc.

Re: iPods
Well, lets see...
iPod touch screen is smaller than archos 604. Archos has higher resolution.
iPod touch max memory: 16gb. Archos 604 wifi: 30gb (Internal hdd is hackable if you really want more space
)
Ipod touch has a calculator, archos doesn't.
archos can play vob, mpeg, and divx. Ipod touch cannot.
Archos can sync with any pc with a usb connection, iPod touch cannot.
I would have to say ipod touch has a longer battery life than archos.
The only thing I can find I like about the iPod touch is that it has flash player in the webbrowser. Other than that, it just doesn't match archos in terms for what I look for in a PMP.

I happen to like techie type stuff. I own a lot of gadgets, if you want to call them that. I can't settle for something average. Yes, iTunes is that bad if you run a OS that can't run it. In fact, its evil because you cannot even get your music onto your iPod because apple locked the new ipod touch to sync with itunes ONLY.
I use all the features on it. Its a great tv recorder, because you can record shows, then they are ready to watch on your portable when ever you want. Divx... Mmmmmm yummy.
I suggest buying one of Sandisk's media players. They are usually cheaper than iPods, and can play videos, music, and view pictures. I bought one for my dad a while ago and it works perfectly. Again, just drag and drop your music onto it. No need to convert.

Re: iPods
Also, my Mp3 player is about as long and wide as an iPod nano, prolly a bit more, but it's thicker than one. And I like this especially because my friend had a nano, but then it was in her back pants pocket, and then she sat down, and it broke. I don't know why, but I seem to like my MP3 player a lot just for the fact that it's nice and strong. ![]()

Re: iPods
Mm, I used to have 2 MP3s - one by Sandisk and the other by.. Someone. Really, they were pieces of junk.
Now, my iPod and blackberry get me where I need just fine. I'm content.
At least until they come out w/ something that can just blow my mind which of course will happen eventually. Probably soon for that matter.

Re: iPods
With how fast technology is moving, as soon as you open the box of a new mp3 player, there is already something better on the market (At least in china, that is).
