Re: How to Draw Spyro

I wish I could see it.

I think I'm going to try this. Looks like fun.  big_smile

Of course I'm not very good at drawing with how to draws so I'll juts wait for the picture to be done.  (:)

People were asking for it. It does give good advice regardless of how or what you draw, but exactly how her example drawings are is how she does it.

Re: How to Draw Spyro

SpyroGirl, your first try is great! Especially when it was done without the tutorial being finished. smile And thank you very much for standing up for me. I'll be nice and not say anything (this is the third Spyro fan who's been mean to me in the past two weeks, though; it's starting to get old >( ). If you don't like the tutorial just because of my style, that's okay, but at least take a look at the part about guide lines. That's something almost every good artist uses.

Anyway...here's the next part of the tutorial!

557_drawspyro004_1.jpg

12. This one is pretty self-explanatory. I drew Spyro's toes and his tail tip and added in all their details.

13. Another easy one: Spyro's wing.

557_drawspyro005_1.jpg

14. At this point, we're almost done! Here I was just filling in some details: Spyro's belly plates and his spikes.

15. Here is Spyro's second wing. Just like I did with his leg, I sketched in the basic shape of the whole wing so I would know where the parts that are not being blocked should go.

557_drawspyro006_1.jpg

16. And here you have it, my final sketch! This is still a bit sloppy and unfinished (and by the time I'd gotten to this point, I'd re-drawn most of Spyro about ten times and was really tired of it, so it's even sloppier than usual big_smile). When I'm drawing with a pencil, a lot of the mess that you see in this finished sketch gets cleaned up after I ink and that looks something like this:

557_drawspyro007_1.jpg

Now you know all my dark, evil secrets for drawing cartoon dragons. big_smile I'd like to stress here that, when you draw, you don't have to do all the steps in the same order as I did (except for the guide lines big_smile) nor do you have to copy my style. In fact, you shouldn't copy my style, you should practice so you can learn your own. Make a reference sheet or get some screen shots and try drawing Spyro from those using whatever advice has been helpful to you (if any). And practice drawing from life, or at least watch how animals and people move. Knowing these things are a big help when you sit down to draw.

For the curious, you can see how I ink a sketch and color it at these links:

Sketch: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro- … h-65369063
Inks 1: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro-Inks-1-65649061
Inks 2: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro-Inks-2-65880319
Inks 3: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro-Inks-3-66013369
Colors 1: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro- … 1-66270523
Colors 2: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro- … 2-66347989
Finished: http://razzek.deviantart.com/art/Spyro- … d-66414007

There are a few more things I'd like to elaborate on in this tutorial, but I don't have the sketches done for those yet. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them!

Constructive criticism is ok, but your criticism is baseless. At least give a suggestion for razz to possibly make it better, but you never did. Its more like a "hit and run" type post.... I am not even sure I could call it criticism, its more of an insult.

Heres an idea, spyrofan511, why don't you make your own "how to draw spyro" tutorial so we can learn your way, since it is obviously superior to razzes style, and less "stuppyd".

Don't worry, we can all wait for your tutorial. We want to give you time so you can make it good.

Well I'll answer that wink
My artteachers always said this, and I know it works:

Limmit the times you erase something to a minimum - or nothing at all.

Try and set small goals for your drawing like... "in this picture I can only erase 5 times, or 3 times (or not at all), and then draw. HOLD IT TO THE AMOUNT YOU SAT FOR THE PICTURE - DONT get carried away. Keep the promises you make about the particular drawing to yourself. Alternertively, you can get someone to watch you draw, and help you with the challenge.

It really works, you just have to make a decission about how many times you're allowed to erase, on every drawing you make.

In time, you'll automaticlly learn, to keep the messy lines, and erasing to a minimum.

Re: How to Draw Spyro

Afronova: Part of it is learning to position my hand in such a way that it doesn't touch the paper much. Pencil (and wet pen ink) smears like nobody's business. I draw on a clipboard so I can turn the paper and hold it the way I want. The other part is that I have Photoshop and it helps me get some of the worst of the smudges my scanner picks up off the paper. big_smile And what Pip says is also very true. I don't erase anything until I've done my basic inkwork on an image; my sketches are seriously messy and hard to puzzle out, but they don't smear too badly (unless I make some of my lines too dark and then drag my hand over it, leaving nasty, unerasable smears on the paper and dark smudges all down my hand). Aww, don't cancel your thread! It's a good one and it's helping people! And your art is very good. smile

Eee, thank you, SpyroGirl! ^_^ I'm honored and flattered. smile

RubyKrystal, hi! ^_^ And that is really freaking awesome! I love the colors and the design and that bold outline, very neat! See, guys? This tutorial isn't just for drawing Spyro, it can help you draw almost anything. smile

Thanks for standing up for me, SR. smile It makes me feel a lot better (I've been having a hard time in the fandom this past week).

There is no right or wrong way to draw something. Sure it may look far from what the art in the game is, but it's all based on a person's drawing style. I also think that Razz's artwork is great. I'd like to see YOU do better.

I freaking adore your art. so much. you're, like, one of my idols. and that sounds kinda sad, but meh.

but the tutorial IS helpful for pretty much anything. I have used it for Spyro, which I am in the middle of colouring right now. I'll scan it when I'm done (possibly tomorrow).

Thanks Razz. I still feel bad about what went down. I seem to drag misfortune and angst with me where ever I go. I should really just learn to keep it to myself.

Re: How to Draw Spyro

I have always wondered how you got those lines so perfect like that...Know i know. Im glad you helped me learn how to draw better. The only thing i could draw before was just weapons...Like daggers, swords, ocassionaly a sheild or bow, but now i know how you make drawings of characters. Thank you Razz.

Re: How to Draw Spyro

It's not a failure smile you don't become a good artist in a blink of an eye ya know. It takes time, and patience, but first and foremost, you must never give up! If you aren't satisfired with your picture, narrow down the points were you arent satisfired, and work on them to improve.

It took me 16 years to be were I am today, so drawing doesn't come in a cheap package (so to speak). But hold your head high (all of you), you can make it, if you really want to wink

I still think it's a great picture for your first attemt big_smile

Thums up to all of you who are giving it a shot with this tutorial! - kudos to you ^__^

Re: How to Draw Spyro

1. Its "Stupid"
2. Razz is a "she".
3. This is Razz's style, not the exact style of the spyro design peoples. She took some elements from the original, but this is mainly how she likes to draw spyro. The other tutorial is for drawing him exactly the way he appears in the game.
