Pocahontas differences

The main villain Ratcliffe.. well he kinda was somewhat bad. But i think that was more due to slight bad leadership and not much with treason itself. The ending is more or less horryfying tongue Compared to Disney

Ratcliffe was elected president and asked John Smith to organise work details and expeditions to trade with Native Americans. By January 1608, only 40 colonists were alive, and Ratcliffe and the Council planned to return to England on the Discovery. Ratcliffe's overgenerous trading provoked Smith to complain that they would soon run out of items to trade. Ratcliffe left office (either by resignation or deposition) in July 1608, two months before the end of his term. At that point, Ratcliffe had lost the faith of the colonists, who accused him of hoarding rations. The colonists were also enraged that as they were sick and dying, Ratcliffe ordered they build a capitol in the woods. The colonists dubbed the project "Ratcliffe's Palace."

Ratcliffe accompanied Christopher Newport when he sailed from Virginia in 1608. He commanded the Diamond, one of the ships in the fleet of Sir Thomas Gates.[1]

In December 1609, Ratcliffe and 14 fellow colonists were invited to a gathering with the a tribe of Powhatan Indians. The Powhatans promised the starving colonists would be given corn, but it was a trap. The colonists were ambushed. Ratcliffe suffered a particular gruesome fate: Ratcliffe was tied to a stake in front of a fire. Women removed the skin from his face with mussel shells and tossed the pieces into the flame as he watched. Finally, he was burned at the stake.

Although the main focus on Disney movie was how bad European colonization was i believe. Atleast that's the image you can sorta get. But there are some differences. For example, Pocahontas who i believe was kept captive is likely the historical truth for a ransom or something. During her captivity she converted to Christianity and stayed with the englishmen instead of returning back to the indians. Although she's also considered a saint in catholic church i believe since according to John's letters she supposedly stopped his chieftain from smashing his head with a club. She took on the name Rebecca and married some Tobacco planter.

Well i guess the main stuff of the movie was to be artistic and just kinda more or less not be historically accurate. Which i am ok with more or less. Usually movies can use that artistic imagery when using a message to it.

I assume most have seen that Disney movie. Curious to what you think?

Re: Pocahontas differences

I think I recall reading that the original tale of Pocahontas was very grim and depressing compared to the final Disney version. Glad the Disney version wasn't that grim or morbid.
