The trend that "being a nerd" is something to be proud of???
This seems to be a case in the western world. Although i will say mostly US Citizens. But it might aswell happen anywhere in the western world, thx to the internet that is. What it basically says "I am proud of being obsessed with certain hobbies, uses unnecessary alot of time on it". In Japan its more the opposite, they will honestly find it insulting. Otaku (Not to be confused with anime geeks. Although its mostly assosiated with it, but its the english version of nerd basically. From my understanding. Living in a house, like stuck up in it is the literal meaning i believe). But basically if you say that, they will not take it lightly.
So basically. Its almost the same as being proud of being called a no life loser. So i've never understood it generally.
But yeah. ![]()

Not really. I don't get paid for this. Youtubers do if they bait people.
Its more to hear your thoughts.
I also read this. Just more or less wondering.

Jerks will be jerks, no matter what they call themselves. You can hide behind the label "nerd" all you want, I still judge you by your actions, and if you're a total *bleep* then prepare for the consequences.
Whenever I see people use the word to describe themselves, I see two reasons for doing so;
(1) Self-deprecating humor; i.e humility
(2) To gain other socially awkward, "special butterfly" followers.
Let's face it, those who proclaim to be nerds are socially inept, obsessed people who are trying to twist their flaws into positives. They try to act like geniuses because that's the only thing they can flaunt. The "nerd" stereotype exists for a reason. May I ask why, though? Why would people like to be called a nerd? If you really see yourself as one, then don't be complacent in it. Improve all of yourself, not just your knowledge.

i don't consider myself a nerd, but if i had to choose, i would rather be socially inept than morally inept.

Re: The trend that "being a nerd" is something to be proud of???
I think it comes down to the meaning of the word--a few people I know including myself call ourselves nerds (mind you I prefer 'geek' for this use) just because we're into nerd/geeky stuff like games, comics, anime, Warhammer etc. If I said I was a 'nerd and proud', that'd be my way of saying 'I like this stuff and I'm not ashamed of it!'. Since it's kind of a modern variant of a word that used to be automatically derogatory--and people aren't necessarily going to assume that you're using it in a positive/neutral sense--I think it's just a way of proclaiming your interests without looking unconfident, which would be even more awkward!
Being a nerd kinda does tend to be associated with quietness/social ineptitude as well, and I think we just don't want to act completely isolated by either 1. not mentioning our computer/media-centred interests at all or 2. mentioning it in a sense that people assume to be self-deprecatory. I mean, being socially inept doesn't necessarily mean we aren't trying to improve, and one important part of that is gaining confidence in oneself!
Oh... but the many nerds out there who are also jerks? Yeah they are a different story entirely =/

Yeah, what I was more going for there was that I see a lot of people who use nerd as an excuse for not trying to improve their social skills. It's the complacency that I can't stand; the excuse making. Am I the only one here who experiences people like this? Maybe. I'm in high school, so I am surrounded by lazy people (not denying my own laziness). But yeah, I get the worry you feel. I feel that a lot, luckily that's what forums... like this... are for.
Wait. Hmm. Let me think through this. Give me a minute, I think I'm sensing some irony on my side.
