Re: How many of you people hate public school?

Not a fan. (Disclaimer: I tend to distrust things that are run by the government by default.)

My public high school was pretty good as far as academics go, but I've heard way too many stories of not-so-good ones to have a positive view of them.

I think they can be very wasteful with money too. I know I've complained about this many times on here already, but my former high school has like 3,200 students and bought Macbooks for every single one of them last year. This year they apparently had to buy NEW ones because the students (surprise!) trashed the free laptops that weren't really theirs. Now it'd be one thing if it was a private school and they were using tuition money to pay for this stuff, but no, these Macbooks came from taxes because it's a public school.

Also, they tend to be obsessed with their sports teams to an unhealthy degree.

If I can at all avoid it, I do not plan to send my kids to public schools.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

i agreed. but the worst thing about public school is the bus incidents.

i know one there's a group of high school boys pulling out their ipods, and started singing bad songs (they even sang the frickin' bartender soong), and yes, they hate their bus driver, so they started yelling out "1 2 3 4 who do we *(bleep)* hate! Mr. Grandberry!" (Dig that. It's true that the bus driver is Mr. Grandberry).

and there's one about a boy from middlle school who got out his phone, and viewed dirty images on his phone, and yelled out the bad words.

Thre's also one about an 8th grader that hit the principal (on purpose) and robbed him.

i don't like public school because of those incidents.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

- half of the lessons are basically useless
- the other half will only be useful to certain people
- sports over academics
- homework
- standardized tests
- discourages individual thought
- the social environment is unhealthy
- the physical environment is unhealthy (sitting ... staring at papers/screens ... writing ... in a room ... for hours)

the only things i learned in public school are a few answers to "Jeopardy!" questions, and an almost pathological distrust of other people.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

wow, you guys have had far worse public school experiences than me
i'm gonna diversify this thread a bit, then.
I enjoy public school despite its stupidity half of the time. When people say that the things you learn are only useful to certain people, I tend to agree, but I don't think it's a bad thing. For one, many, many people have no idea what they want to do later on. Hell, some don't know even after they're done with school. By diversifying what is learned, they open up more opportunities to the students. Also, knowing more gives my mind a satisfaction. I feel like I gain a better sense of logic the more I learn. Plus, I feel public schools are the best for social interactivity. I don't know anyone at my school who is entirely a loner, or has no friends.
Also, for the whole sports thing, I know many schools do it differently, but how mine does it is you can't participate in sports if you have bad grades, and I've not done sports since third grade, so you definitely don't have to do them, by any means.

howevr im jus a lil boy wif no experienc on life pls dont hurt me

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

I think most schools have a grade requirement for sports, but the problem is that can lead to teachers fudging the grades for the star players if the school is obsessed enough. It's a common thing that happens in media, at least, not sure on the statistics of it in real life, but I'll bet it's at least moderately high. Don't quote me on this. sparx

Learning a variety of subjects is definitely a good thing, that's true. The problem most people have with public schools isn't necessarily that. It's that every student has different needs for learning, not all of which are going to be met by a traditional environment of sitting in a desk for six hours. Some might need extra help in some subjects and less in others; some might not be good test takers; some might need to more physical activity during the day. And some (most?) are "easily distracted" and just can't pay attention to a 90 minute lecture without getting bored and doodling in their notebooks instead. Everyone has a different style of learning, and traditional school unfortunately boxes everyone into the same structure. I can't blame the schools for this - they obviously don't have the resources to meet each individual student where they are with a customized lesson plan. But it's definitely a downside if you have a type of personality where you wouldn't do well in an office job.

Edit: The social environment being unhealthy is another big one, but then, I was basically one of those "loner" students who ate lunch by herself as quickly as possible and then went to the library to chat with her internet friends on the computers, so I'm no expert on it. I did notice that there were definite cliques, though. Like there was this wall where all the cool kids gathered to clog up the hallway and apparently they'd look at you funny if you stopped there for too long without their approval. And at lunch there were distinct "goth," "jock," "drama," and "nerd" tables. I remember the goth table being on the outskirts of all the other tables under the stairwell. Weird that a school with thousands of students could manage to form cliques like that, but it did somehow.

My school was so huge that if you weren't in their system since elementary school you were going to have a hard time socially. No one was mean to me or anything; they just didn't know I existed. I pretty much had one very outgoing friend who made it look like I had other friends because they were all her friends. My younger sister is about as shy as I am and has tons of friends in that school, but she's been in their system since like first grade whereas I entered in seventh knowing nobody, so.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

I should tell you the bad times I've had in public school.

When I was in Kindergarten: Mrs. Robinson said one time, IF YOU DON'T SETTLE RIGHT NOW I'LL MO'LL USE YOUR SICURRE CUT YOUR EARS!!!!!!! And for some reason they called me my full name Josh Ellis and the rest the students were called by their first name, uh... okay then... why didn't they call me only my first name? It doesn't make sense. And this stupid kid Stifanse annoyed me so much by copying what I say at the same time!

When I was in the 1st grade: And in my final days of 1st grade I got punished even though I didn't deserve it and it's because of August, Nathan and I forgot the others they got me introuble by freaking annoying me and yet the teachers punish me? What bunch of BS.

When I was in the 3rd grade: It was like HELL for me!!! Because this retarted kid Chandler had an f***ing smart mouth he blamed me for everything he did and I got in trouble most of the freaking time because of him!!! I swear to God I wish I punched him in the mouth cause he would have deserved it because of everything he was doing like taking off my shoes with his other shoes and when I told him to stop, he said I'm not doing either he was, such lieing *bleep*!!! And the some the other kids were annoying some of them were jerks, and this fat girl I guess her name was Kathy, one time she almost broke my hand because she got us into a fight and she was a jerk too. And Ms. Guy, I hate her because she didn't care overall, she didn't that Chandler was being a smart mouth getting me introuble because of his mistakes! So yeah, 3rd grade was the worst grade I was ever in!

When I was in the 5th grade: This fat *bleep* teacher Ms. Love, when I kept getting every answer wrong on question she, "STOP IT, STOP STARRING OFF INTO SPACE, LORD HAVE MERCY!!! And yes the other teacher I forgot her name, one time my Mom helped me with my homework she gave me a D grade, okay my Mom was helping me I'm sure she knows what she doing. And this other Ms. Baliga she kept getting mad at me and the other students for a reason just so. So yeah public school sucks, and in fact when finished the 5th grade I had be homeschooled.

Our school was...ehhhhhhhhhhhhh

Some things were crap.
The headteacher had NO presence or power.
The Anti-bullying teacher was a cow (if a girl had a issue she was all-over it but when boys had issues she was all "oh well boys will be boys, and let homophobia run ramped towards the male students)
The female deputy head once again, let bullying run rampant
Some subjects were...better taught than others for example English and History was good yet science was pretty bad

Good things
I liked my art, English, History and  Teachers :-P
The male deputy head was so nuts you had to look at him and wonder "what the hell is he smoking."

I've heard a defense of home schooling that I really liked about the social interaction thing. When you go through school, especially public school, the main people you are learning social skills from are your peers, who are going to be just as inexperienced as you are whereas when you are homeschooled you're interacting with your parents much more and seeing how a fully grown and mature adult handles social interactions. I personally went to public school, but I met lots of home schooled kids when I went to college and they all proved this theory correct. They were never the type to have hour long discussions revolving around lewd jokes; or party constantly and struggle to have discussions with peers that weren't either initiated by or sabout drunkenness. The home schooled kids were always the really mature and friendly ones who you could always have a good intelligent discussion with.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

True. but i hate the bus incidents occurred around me.

Seriously, high school boys? singing the bad words on the bus? sounds like a bad idea. and Flapjacks, if you ride the bus, please don't yell or sing out the bad words on the bus. because you might get in trouble. and i don't want anyone to get in trouble at either school or on the bus.

EDIT: Glad i didn't do all that. but someone got it all on tape. and yes, the high school boys were sent to an Alternative Learning Center for profanity on the bus, gang activity, and one of them once told a high school girl that she has a, uh, you know what. Don't do that either Flapjacks. because it's what's part of 'name calling'.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

To clarify my own post, not all kids from college who went to a public high school were like I described (I went to a public school, as did both Stormy and each of my friends who I consider my closest), just that no homeschooled kids were whereas a decent amount of public, and private honestly, schooled kids were.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

I don't have much to add since I basically have the same story as Stormy, minus 2 years (we're siblings, y'know). I started public school in 5th grade coming from a small private school. I honestly liked public school a lot more. I was more involved in soccer and had classmates and friends to talk to because of that. Plus side was, I was no longer bullied like I was in elementary school. High school on the other hand was pretty bad. I've always been one of those kids that doesn't really talk unless talked to, and so you can imagine how being in a graduating class of 700+ people was. On top of that, I had a surgery which cut me off from playing soccer or any sport except for casually, so my major social outlet was lost. I probably would have done much better socially if was able to stick with that or find some other activity in high school. But yeah, the social atmosphere is there, it's just people are super judgmental, and if you don't have an "in" it can be hard to have a good experience.

But spyrothepalmontcityracer's (I'm just gonna call you SPCR from now on, k? tongue ) comment reminded me of the bus in elementary school. Stormy and I went to a small, Catholic, private school...and the bus driver played contemporary pop/rap stations on the radio to and from school. So, imagine, if you can, a bus full of Kindergarten through 8th graders...it was pure chaos. I remember a regular thing was that kids would crawl under seats while the bus was running just for fun. Public school introduced the "cool" kids who learned swear words from their older siblings and sat in the back of the bus, but honestly I just ignored those types of people anyway.

I can't really say anything bad. As I have fond memories of my expireiences. The peeps I met there are still like family to me. Even though I don't see em anymore. It was great.

I am sorry not everyone's expireience was the best.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

Some of the classes in my high school, heck, even some in college, were complete jokes because of the scantron tests. You could literally not read any of the material and not pay attention during a single lecture and be able to guess most of the multiple choice answers. And if you did read, it was even easier because the questions were taken verbatim from the textbooks.

School is school, atleast thats what i think of public school. Nothing i make a big deal out of. Everyone goes there. I feel private schools is more a special school i feel, or summer camp feel to it. Atleast that's what i think about it.

The one good thing about public school is that it teaches you how to act around bad people. Teaches you how to watch your own back. And it teaches you that the world is full of *bleep*.

True. and SPCR is kinda short, so ok.

It is an awful idea to sing out the bad words on the bus. because only adults are allowed to use profanaty. but people 18 and under are not allowed to use profanaty because they're under-aged, and they could easily offend someone. the Bartender Song is kinda offensive to sing on the bus because it has bad words in it. even the song about a snuffloficus, and even the one that has something to do with the #1 super(something). and everyone on the bus hates their bus driver, so they started protesting on the bus, they want the bus driver to retire but the bus driver said that he's not old enough to retire (he was like 67 or something), and he is very disrespectful to everyone on the bus.

This is why i don't ride the bus anymore. all i have to do is walk to school (before i had my motorcycle).

One thing i hate about public school is that there's an entire history of incidents. When i was in 3rd grade, i had someone got in trouble for vulgar language and gossiping about the teacher.

my 7th grade year is the worst because too many violence has occurred, i mean, intense.

Re: How many of you people hate public school?

I hate public school mainly for how mean kids can be to one another and how cliques exist in middle and high school. Those were the two things in public school I hated the most. That and kids have no respect for their teachers and principals which I did.
