i was about to play one of my PS2 games on my ps3 and it saids 'this ps3 system is not compatible with PS2 format software', i installed the PS2 system software plugin and my PS3 just refuses to read a ps2 game. The pic below is what my ps3 actually looks like....

Does anyone out there knows how to get my ps3 to read a ps2 game?

Re: Need help, PS3 won't read PS2 games

Only certain models of PS3 are backwards compatible with PS2 games. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the incompatibility is due to missing hardware, not software, so a plugin isn't going to make a non-backwards compatible PS3 backwards compatible.

Absolutely correct. A quick way to tell if yours is the backwards compatible model is the number is USB ports you have to plug controllers into the PS3. Do you have 2 or 4?

Even then many PS2 games still don't work on the backwards compatible PS3

Re: Need help, PS3 won't read PS2 games

What model is it? Only the 20 GB, 60 GB and some (CECHExx) 80 GB models are backwards compatible according to Wikipedia.

Wikipedia wrote:

The 40GB, 80GB re-release, 160GB, and the slim version of the PS3 are not officially backwards compatible with PS2 games because all hardware chips from the former console are omitted and there is no software emulation; however, a chipped method is available. This not only voids the user's warranty of the system but also decreases the life of the system as the chip is known to overheat various system components. However, all versions of the PS3 are able to play PS1 games.

So if you don't have one of the models that are officially backwards compatible, a downloadable plugin won't do anything.

But how many USB ports are actually on the PS3? That will tell you if yours is backwards compatible or not.

Now I'm wondering who made this so-called "plugin" and what it actually does. Probably not anything good.

Re: Need help, PS3 won't read PS2 games

Basically when PS3 first came out you could play PS2 games "If you had the 60GB PS3 old version(Which can play all PS2 games)"80GB PS3 can play some PS2 games but not all" and the others i think couldn't play any PS2 game. I'd just recommend getting a PS2 though ^^

Re: Need help, PS3 won't read PS2 games

A plugin cannot make a new gen ps3 read ps2 discs for the simple reason that sony removed the EmotionEngine CPU chip from the new gen ps3's. That chip is REQUIRED To run any PS2 game.
