What are you studying?

So you probably all come on the internet to get away from school right? Well tough luck, I've made an education and study topic >:)

So... Tell me about what you study, where you're studying, whether you're enjoying it, what you're hoping for in the future, all that jazz smile

Re: What are you studying?

i'm not in school. i do study several things at any given time, just not in an academic setting or manner. psychology, music, and the Bible are big things for me right now. philosophy and conspiracy theories to a lesser extent. music sticks out the most because i'm trying to learn about the elements of harmony as a vocalist, how to do guitar chugging which is very hard for me for some reason, and learning to write with things i would shy away from before such as the major scale. i also just want to learn how to write more complex music, most of my old stuff was repetitive melodies with very simple percussion. i'm also trying to improve on all of my vocal styles more, mostly growls, cleans ("singing"), and both male and female opera vocals. ideally i would like to also learn how to add that "classic metal"/"thrash metal" type of edge to my voice that's not quite a growl, but has that extra bite to it, which i really suck at.

i mentioned psychology, i'm sort of studying that unwillingly actually, i just pick up on behaviors instinctively and just slowly learn more about how humans work. i don't actually put much conscious effort into learning about it these days unless i hear about some mental condition i want to research or something. yet at the same time i'm astoundingly confused about my own psychology.

my own emotions confuse me a lot these days so i can't really say if i'm "enjoying" studying these things. i enjoy making music, that's for sure. the other things don't bring me active disgust, so i guess you could call it enjoyment. i'm hoping to have a career in music and make the world a better place through the other things.

Re: What are you studying?

Final year of high school, Standard english, art, drama, ancient history and maths. Used to do a visual design course, but I was running advanced english at one point and I needed the extra time, worst decision of my life thus far. Loved that subject.

Re: What are you studying?

Right now I'm in my second semester of my junior year in college. I'm studying biology, and I love biology, but I detest the chemistry courses. I mean, I did pretty good in my first two chem courses, but I dropped organic chemistry this past semester, and now I'm behind. sad It was a 4 credit hour class, and I just felt like I couldn't handle it and 14 other hours of classes. I felt like all the effort I had to put into it was taking over my life and, consequently, I was neglecting my other classes, so I had to make the decision to drop it. I honestly have no idea what I want to do with my biology degree though. I've always wanted to go to veterinary school, but I've begun to think realistically, lol. I don't think I can handle that much school.

Re: What are you studying?

Yeah, deciding what to do with a degree is always hard hmm

I'm studying maths at university, in my first year, loving it so far. It's so overwhelming to begin with butt you get used to it after a while. It's all worth it if you're doing a subject you love, though. I'm taking a 4-year masters degree course, no idea what I'm gonna do with my degree when I'm finished though.

Re: What are you studying?

That's really cool. Not a lot of people choose math it seems! Have you ever thought about going in to teaching? Good math teachers are hard to come by and it seems like schools are always looking for them. One of my friends that I've been in school with since elementary school is studying math education.

I'm actually considering education but I haven't made anything final yet. I love talking about maths to people but I think I'd make a terrible teacher ahaha tongue And I think I agree, it's hard to teach maths and quite often maths teachers just aren't good enough, I was lucky enough to have some very good maths teachers in my school to help me get to where I am today though smile

Re: What are you studying?

I'm in my final semester of college, getting my bachelor's in Environmental Studies and Geographic Information Science.  I actually talked to my adviser today and it sounds like I'll be able to graduate with honors if I put together a project and presentation outside of class (I'm hoping to hear back from some job/research opportunities I've applied for in order to work towards that). I at least have a guaranteed job lined up (not in my field) for the Spring when I graduate, so I haven't had to stress too much. There seems to be a lot of places around where I live that are interested in environmental planning or managing/analyzing geographic data, so my hopes are that I can find a full time career by this time next year.

All the respect for you all who are going for their master's or graduate school. I'm pretty much ready to put school behind me at this point. I actually enjoy most of my classes now since they're not just generals, but I could not imagine myself going back to school for another 2-4 years... not too mention how expensive college is in the States. :\

Same, any studying or learning I plan to do from here on out will be self taught and enforced, like what 36 was saying he does. Even if I ever get a job that offers to pay to put me through grad school I'd still only do it if the tradeoff was a huge raise or something.

As for what I went to school for the answer would be computer science. It's gotten me a decent job (don't worry Swaffy, this will come if you hang in there and keep trying) and a pretty useful set of skills. I very nearly minored in history, not because I wanted a job in it, but because I've always been interested in history. If I could go back, I'd probably take some of the theology and philosophy courses that my school offered since I only took the bare minimum at the time (we were required to take at least 2 throughout our 4 years) since I'm way more interested in that stuff now. But it's all good, I've been reading some interesting books on the topic and several of my friends from school are far more knowledgeable about it (many of them majored in one of the two) and I talk to them whenever I get the chance so I'm slowly learning it.

Re: What are you studying?

Sadly. Nothing right now. After high school I took a small course in studying, for and focusing on jobs and co-op. but after that. I have been taking a break trying to find a college, I  don't  know want I will study. But it won't be to hard or easy for me hopefully I will find a college, and study something in my skill range.

Re: What are you studying?

I never used to be a fan of history but since coming to uni I've definitely learned to appreciate it more haha tongue my friend is an ancient and modern history student but he tends to focus on the ancient stuff - basically he took and ancient and modern so that he could focus on the ancient stuff without having to learn latin like he would if he was taking classics hahaha
