Reviewers are not always right

Even if some person prefer 5 recommended pie, doesnt mean it tastes as good as the other non recommended stuff.

Just wondering with the internet today, that people allow themself to be controlled by this information, instead of relying on their own taste.

In my opinion it's just people's naivety. Like "Oh, it's expensive but people say it's very good so i't has to be better than the cheap stuff, so i'll get this."

Never ask what I'd do for a klondike bar. No one wants to go down that road.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

Exactly. The internet has been a new formula of making one person to be the judge of what one should like. Which i find a little unfair, compared to people or team who used effort and time into making that stuff, movie or game etc etc. Its cool that people want to share opinions about stuff, i love that. Its just when one gets on the high chair about it. Like some of the YouTubers for example.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

There's a right and a wrong way to use reviews. If you always take everything they say as 100% truth, you're doing it wrong. If you listen to what they have to say critically and apply it to your own preferences, then you're not doing it wrong - you're just getting an idea of what you might like or dislike before you spend the money.

For example, I watch a lot of video reviews, and I find that a lot of the reviewers complain about minor details that I don't really care about. An extreme example could be something like, "Cynder used to be black, and now she's purple! This game obviously doesn't care about the fans and totally sucks!" So when they start going on about that kind of stuff, I know it's not going to bother me when I play the game and instead listen to other things that might be more important.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

a lot of the problem is that people don't review things objectively or fairly very often, at least in music. it seems to be a problem with video games, too. and probably movies. people seem to often let personal preference take over. which i guess is unavoidable to a point. but you can still be fair about it. if you have an album/game in a style you don't like, you can still give credit for the album's/game's/etc possible appeal to people who would like it, or at least the effort that went into it.

not that effort is necessarily 100% needed to make something people will like. improvisation works surprisingly well sometimes.

in general if possible i'd avoid reviews though, they can be useful but often give an unfair bias, you should probably just try it yourself, unless it's something really rare... then reviews might come in handy.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

I often use reviews as a last ditch effort to make sure something is worth checking out or not. Like Stormy said, I try to focus more on why they give the scores they do than what the score actually is.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

I generally always check review scores before I buy a game. The reason being: I don't want to waste my money.

That said, I don't just look at IGN, see the game has a 7/10 and be like, "eh, I guess it's not good enough". I'll generally check multiple sources and if everyone has a similar gripe that I think sounds pretty negative I'll probably stay away from that game. On the otherhand, if I see that some on the perceived "negatives" by the reviewers wouldn't bother me, then I'll probably give the game a look. I almost always look at gameplay footage as well before I buy. I almost never pre-order anything, because you're just setting yourself up for failure without knowing if the game is going to be good or not. (I think the only game I've preordered was Infamous 2 back in 2011 because I was super hyped. tongue And it turned out well so lucky me )

So, in short, don't blame the reviewers, blame the people who blindly cling onto a single score to determine whether or not they'll like a game. If you do that, you have no right to complain about reviews, because you should be aware of subjective bias and that everyone has different preferences.

Re: Reviewers are not always right

What if there was a person criticizing reviewers of games and movies. The irony would be so high yikes

Re: Reviewers are not always right

Instead of reading game reviews and listening to other people's opinions, I'll watch gameplay and see for it myself. I don't want someone else telling me if something's good or not. It's usually biased and I'm not like anyone else.
