Books

Any recommendations for good books or series?

I've been wanting to get into the habit of reading again. I used to read a fair amount when I was younger, but sadly I haven't read a book for enjoyment in a really long time. And with the summer coming up, I'm going to be looking for things to take up my time when I'm not working.

Right now I'm looking at reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings because I've never actually read through all of them. Also going to borrow the Eragon books from one of my friends since I never finished them back in middle school.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have! Also, anyone have experience with eReaders like Kindle? If I were to purchase one, do you think it would save me money, or should I just stick to real books?

Re: Books

I think The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series is pretty good it's about a group of warrior owls who protect their tree and other owl homes from evil known as the Pure Ones. A group of Barn Owls who feel their the only true owl race.I haven't read them all wish I did but I know it's good.

There is also the I Am Number Four Series. A group of alien human looking people must band together to stop an evil assassin alien group bent on killing them and taking something important from them.

Harry Potter is good don't if you read that. Also Percy Jackson book series and The Heroes of Olympus are also pretty good.

Don't know of you would like those but those are just a few I know.

Re: Books

I've never much been into books, although I can back up John in saying that the Harry Potter series is good. It's fans, however... well... The Lord of the Rings books are really good, too.

Re: Books

I've actually read the Harry Potter books a couple times already, haha.

Funny, I read Guardians of Gahoole as well years ago. I remember really enjoying them. I'll have to check out I Am Number Four.

Flames of the Tiger

If you like WWII, and kids surviving in Berlin, this is for you.

Re: Books

I'm not into reading much, but how about reading a series that isn't so mainstream? Like read something educational or historical that may interest you. Other than that I don't know of any titles that I can suggest.

My mother has owned a couple of Kindles, and from what I can see they're pretty much like a mobile phone, actually. I'm not sure what reading a book from it is like, though. lol My mom never really used hers for that. But I did once try to read something on her old Kindle Fire and it seemed like the text displayed funny on the pages.

Re: Books

Thanks for the suggestions. Both Age of Fire and Flames of the Tiger look like interesting reads.

I'm open to anything really. The reason I asked here is because I have a hard time trying to find books myself. They don't have to be fiction, I just don't know where to start looking because there's so many books out there. With video games I have a general idea of what I like to play, but it's a little more difficult with books. The only reason I'm looking to read those "mainstream" books is because I never got the chance to, and they probably became mainstream for a reason, you know?

I did a little more research and it looks like you can borrow a lot of books for free with Amazon Prime (which I have), so I might just buy a Kindle at some point. I don't think I would want to read books on my phone's tiny screen, haha. I know my little sister had a Kindle, and from what little I saw of it, the screen seemed pretty unintrusive. I don't think I would need a fancy one with internet browsers and all that.

If anyone else is looking for something to read, I suggest the His Dark Materials trilogy. Stormy recommended them to me a while ago, and they are great (from what I remember). The Golden Compass movie really didn't do the books justice.

Re: Books

HDM is a good trilogy. I don't really agree with some of the conclusions they come to in the last book, but ignoring all that it's a really good fantasy/adventure story.

Wish I had some suggestions, but unfortunately I haven't read a book for fun since probably before college. sad

Re: Books

It depends. Sometimes things actually are popular because they're good. Other things are Twilight, for example. tongue

Re: Books

It seems pretty random what gets noticed sometimes; that's true. I'm just saying that a lot of popular things do deserve it and don't need to be dismissed just because they're mainstream. I mean, even statistically, if a lot of people like it, it's not unlikely that a random person trying it for the first time would like it, too. Although of course this all depends on your personal tastes.

Yeah I get that. I tend to not like very many mainstream things like popular music, TV shows, social networking, and stuff like that. It's just a good place to start. Obviously I'm not just going to go out and read every book that's on a top 10 list or something, but with a little discretion (reading summaries, etc) I think I would be able to find some worthwhile ideas at least.

Re: Books

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King is supposed to be good. I think that's gonna be the next thing I read. It's sort of fantasy and sort of sci -fi, but mostly a western. I also support those who have already said Lord of the Rings. I just reread those last year and got a lot more out of them than I did when I was little. Two of my favorite standalone books that I'd recommend are Brave New World and the Brothers Karamazov. BNW is a great warning of the dangers of entertainment and trusting the government too much. Brothers K is about an extremely dysfunctional family during tsarist Russia. It's got a lot to say about religion, philosophy, and human nature.

Re: Books

I've been reading the Stormlight Archive series of books- by Brandon Sanderson. It's one of my favorite series, with a third book on the way. To note, Sanderson is also the man responsible for finishing Robert Jordan's epic The Wheel Of Time series. The Mistborn Trilogy is also a nice one. Other than that, The Forever War and Manifold Time, if you're not into swords-and-sorcery type settings. The Forever War is a rather interesting one, a bit of a social commentary, while following the exploits of a soldier in a interstellar war- Using relativistic travel, rather than FTL or Gate systems. Very interesting. Manifold Time, on the other hand... You just need to read it, I can't do it justice here.
