I'm actually describing a jam session the did together at a concert once. Frank started playing this song called 'Scumbag'. John joined in, and, soon enough, the audience.

yeah. you usually clap, regardless of if you actually approve of what just happened. that's called "lying" and is wrong, but somehow that's still often perceived as a respectful gesture.
i generally wouldn't perceive somebody faking approval of me to be a respectful gesture.
