Why Can't You Draw?
I found this article the other day and thought of this forum because a lot of us say stuff like "I wish I could draw" all the time. I think this is a good way of thinking about art, and it kind of makes me think twice about wishing for talent instead of actually practicing.

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
I've read so much on DeviantArt from people saying that all you have to do to make better art (and grow in skill) is so draw ... and just keep drawing. And give yourself time. Also, don't look at other people's art for references.

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
I just draw when something comes to my brain and i want to put it on paper. I'm not unhappy with my cartoonish style, and it keeps improving too. Like in ratatoullie they said, ''anyone can cook'' well then anyone can draw ![]()

Anybody can draw ![]()
You just take this pencil over here..., and over there..... And there you go. Just do it, practice makes a champ! Leave everything to the imagination when you draw

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
Easier said than done. *dies* I'm sort of a perfectionist ... and so I get stuck on the smallest things while siply drawing lineart. So I get frustrated with it and just stop.
I get sad.
This is why I can't draw.

This is the same reason I can't draw. I can spend up to an hour on one inch of art before it looks even close to what I want it to look like. And that's just a quick sketch.
I'm not sorry if I offended you.

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
I like drawing a lot. It's like an escape for me, just like reality. I try to do my best and don't get too stressed out over it. Naturally that led me from this to this so yeah, I can vouch for practicing

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
Nerve damage prevents me from holding a pencil/drawing utensil for too long without extreme discomfort/pain. So no, not everyone can do it.

I can draw. Not realistic images, but shapes and surreal visions.

Re: Why Can't You Draw?
I have this book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It describes how at a certain age, our brains strongly associate the visual world with symbols, and while that is a useful tool for simplification, it's why we tend to stall in our drawing skills typically at around age 12 or so. Stick figures are the representation of various symbols (e.g. circle for a head), so just like the article you posted said, drawing goes beyond that sort of symbolism. Many people find themselves in a rut trying to get out of that symbolic thinking. It's why a lot of adults still make child-like drawings if you asked them to draw the best they could.

Thank you for posting that, bmah. It makes sense but it makes me more sad.
