people enjoy nostalgia so much because the past consistently proves to be better than the present for many people. the past was a better time for them, and life was supposedly better then. why this applies to digital media, i don't know - maybe because it's representative of that time. like food, nobody is nostalgic about food, people are nostalgic about the circumstances in which they ate the food, like somebody special made it or they ate it at a special point in their lives, and so the same applies to video games?

I completely understand experiencing nostalgia from video games. What I don't get is everyone going "this destroys my childhood!" because they don't like the new version of <insert game here>.

i guess people treat video game storylines like real life. even though every game is a (digital depiction of a) universe within itself, the implied continuity makes it seem like things are changing, and i guess people are affected in a similar way to real-life changes taking place. i'm not a psychologist, this is just what i'm guessing.

i feel like my posts aren't making a lot of sense. i need to stop coming on here when i'm tired, i'm not concentrating very well, and i'm not great at explaining my thoughts to begin with, but yet i can't quite bring myself to sign off and go to bed.

I would have probably just reduced it to "people take video games too seriously," but that explanation actually makes a lot of sense.

Right? All those people who worship Pokemon Red and Blue as the epitome of nostalgic gaming and whine about every new generation should just take a step back, play their old game, and realize that it's still exactly the same as it always was. Then maybe pick up one of the new games and realize that a lot of things have been improved in the series since the days of the original Gameboy.
