Hurricane hits New York City!
Last night, a hurricane hit New York city, flooding parts of Manhattan and leaving millions without power. Coincidence? Global warming? i want your feedback on how such a powerful storm could get that far north (i've always believed the ocean water was too cold to support such powerful storms).

Re: Hurricane hits New York City!
Well, as climate change causes certain parts of the ocean to become warmer, hurricanes are expected, but for a second hurricane to hit NE United States in such a short time period... it's not what I was expecting.

Re: Hurricane hits New York City!
Nature does stuff we don't expect. It's not a program that does the same thing
over and over again. Yes, the storm's path may have been unusual, but we
should be preparing for things such as that. A storm can change direction
without us fully understanding why. It's just nature. I don't know how I can
better explain it.
I live in San Antonio, Texas. The most we get out of hurricanes are rain
storms with, at most, a good thunderstorm. Even though we are not in the
normal path of weather conditions such as tornadoes and hurricanes, I try to
be aware of the storm in case it plays a tricky card and turns toward us.

An opportunity to learn something!
Does anyone know how these hurricanes are formed? You said it was something to do with warm water?

Re: Hurricane hits New York City!
The Water Cycle. Water evaporates and forms clouds...as i'm sure we are all fairly aware. In warm areas of the ocean, those clouds gather to from storms, which are capable of generating their own air pressure and wind currents; The longer the storm stays over an area of warm water, the stronger it gets, feeding off thermal energy in the Ocean. when these storms hit land, they weaken-and cause major devastation to cities.

I'm sorry if I seem rude, but I laughed.
You're fine, Clocky. Those white parts are just clouds. It's quite interesting.

Re: Hurricane hits New York City!
Anyone hear about the fire in Queens? the storm fanned it and prevented firefighters from putting it out. last thing you'd expect in the middle of a hurricane.

We often get the tail ends of hurricanes. This just looks like regular clouds over England, as per usual, but when we get the tail end of hurricanes, it gets really windy. Not like England-windy, like more than England-windy. So very windy and not normal windy. Yes.

We were going to watch the godawful film, showgirls, however my friend who said that we will watch it on wednesday, now claims she said friday...despite the fact everyone heard her say wednesday -_- and the worst part she she refuses to even say she agreed to wednesday, i mean its not a big deal, just say you made a mistake as opposed to telling us all that you had planned it for friday from day one -_-

Re: Hurricane hits New York City!
ok so it is the largest hurricane in recorded history and its only a category one. NYC is not designed to withstand such a thing. it is a fairy windy place and there are sections of it that could probably create wind tunnels which would make it that much stronger/devastating. However after this i really hope that those people in NY will stop all their complaining when Texas Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida get hit by category 3 or higher hurricanes and receive federal aid. because from the looks of it they are going to need a lot of help to recover from this.
as a side note while most of us down here and SE Texas usually do not evacuate for anything that is a cat 2 or lower we do not simply walk around in the middle of a freaking hurricane while it is hitting our area of the world. so then will someone please tell me what the bloody heck these morons were thinking walking around shirtless with horse masks, dancing in the middle of the street, and taking walks through central park!? i swear those idiots have/had a death wish (i do feel bad about the people who died in central park and the other people that got killed and i do not mean to offend but it really was a very stupid thing to do during a hurricane).

Very true Silverdragon7. NYC's buildings were not designed to withstand such weather, and i agree that the nature of the city's buildings are likely to create wind tunnel-like conditions in the streets, with the likely effect of increasing their destructive power.
Also people walking in Central Park in a hurricane? i also agree, not a very good or smart idea.
