Prepare for a completely new interface! Or, just "sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop" in the terminal. Word is they're removing the menu bar in favor of a command-line type thing.

It's not cloud storage. It's an operating system, like Windows 7 or Mac OSX.

I've got 11.10 on my netbook that I've had since 2008. It used to have Windows XP, but it was just getting so slow it was almost unusable. So this was an easy fix. It was hard to get used to, though, since I've always used some version of Windows for the entirety of my computer-literate life.

The only thing that really annoys me about it are some little quirks with the interface like the menu bar on the side coming up when I'm trying to click the back button on my browser, the menu bar not coming up at all, or the menu bar sticking around too long. Yeah, they're all about the menu bar, so if they're getting rid of that thing completely I might have to upgrade just for that. tongue Other than that it's great; I'm loving how it's not constantly bogged down with system processes.

The sidebar (like the thing on the bottom of the Mac display) is staying. The menubar is the thing at the top with "file", "edit", etc.

you could get the GNOME 3 interface with the command I posted earlier.
There's also Kubuntu (KDE) and Xubuntu. They have different requirement and interfaces.

I have seen videos on Ubuntu. My college uses Fedora 13, though. It's still
Linux-based, though. Looks the same at least. Well, I'll just stick with my
Win7, but I still have a Win7 and Fedora 13 virtual machine so I can use
those. Good enough? Meh. It resets after each shutdown/restart, so I cannot
make any permanent changes to them. It's nice for learning and stuff.

I used to use ubuntu ever since the big hack incident occured. I had accidentally downloaded a virus that was pretending to be an antivirus software. A factory reboot of the now about thirteen year old EEE netbook and ubuntu... Was it 11.04? And I was perfect. I recently updated to 11.10, but then I got a new laptop, which can actually handle something along Skyrim on high quality. (Windows seven for that one, still trying to figure out how to get it to dual boot to Ubuntu.)

Huh. I still have Windows XP and It's...well...*bleep*. I might want to look into this someday. If It's free that is.

Great, I will try this new version in virtualbox, but I think I will stay with fedora 16. Which desktop environment is going to be as default in the new version of Ubuntu? Unity?

An operating system is a set of programs on top of a kernel that manages processes, memory, and user events. Everything that runs off of a general CPU requires some form of an OS, whether it is a server, a laptop, a router, or a micro controller.

It also refers to all the applications that are integrated into that computer. Desktop operating systems typically have a window management system, a file browser, some set of preferences, and some accessory applications (calculator, paint, image viewer, etc.)

Linux is a free, open-source operating system that allows customizations beyond that of any Windows or OSX computer. Because of this, Linux is adapted to run on dozens of different hardware setups, such as servers, mobile devices, or desktops. Ubuntu is an example of a personal computer OS.

Unity is default, but you can easily install GNOME if you want to with this command in the terminal

There's also Kubuntu with KDE. I don't think it's as stable, but it is great.

It is free, but like I said it is quite a bit different than Windows in many ways, so if you're really used to Windows you might want to think about it a bit before just going ahead and installing it. You can try it out before you install if you boot from disk or a flash drive with Ubuntu on it.

Also, a lot of Windows applications you might want to use will not work on Ubuntu. You can't just go on the internet and install anything you want; there's a limited selection of programs that have been written specifically for Linux distributions. There are free equivalents to most programs I used on Windows, but sometimes they're not quite as good. I really miss Google Talk. sad

Or you can use WINE to install certain pieces of software made for Windows. I got Jazz Jackrabbit 2 to work...sort of. I need to figure out the intended installation architecture, because no one made a JJ2 WINE installer yet.

And as a Mac user, it was pretty dang easy to get used to Ubuntu.

Google Talk (which is pretty much the only Windows program I really care about getting for this computer) didn't work in Wine for me. I haven't tried any others.

You're probably using the application version, which is indeed Windows only. There is a plugin version for iGoogle, gmail, etc, regardless of OS or browser.

I'd rather it not be a plugin. I just liked the convenience of not always having to leave the browser open. I almost might as well just leave a tab open on Gmail constantly, which is what I do now.

But it's not really a big deal. It came with Empathy messenger which doesn't notify me of emails or look as nice, but it works well enough.

I used to run ubuntu on my old laptop, just use it (or centos) or server setups now.

Archlinux is actually really nice, as its super basic and lean, you just install what you need.
