Re: Skyrim

I have FINALLY got my computer built so that I can play Skyrim!

I could barely play it before because I kept getting 10FPS and it kept crashing. And today just so happens to be a snow day...

Just need to transfer my save files over now so I can continue playing.

Before: iMac (nuff said why I couldn't play it). I really like Macs, but the downfall was the graphics card. I'm going to use this computer for everything not game related.

My new computer is strictly for gaming:

Antec 900 2 Case - Looks 5x cooler IRL, not the image.
P8P67 Motherboard - Can hold 2 PCIe 2.0 cards, so I can get another graphics card in the future. Has amazing BIOs too (over clock at the push of a button).
Intel i5 2500k - Call me an Intel fanboy, but despite AMD's stock processors having the same power for $15 less, I would never trust an AMD to overclock.
Some sort of 8GB RAM - I'll admit, I'm not picky about memory. This was cheap and it worked. Only issue was that it is actually 1033 stock. You need to manually bump it up in the BIOs to 1600 (again, my Asus board does it perfectly).
Black Widow 850w PSU - I know it is overkill, but I make sure to never skimp out on a cheap PSU. As the one thing that can completely blow up my computer, I want this to last a good couple years.
500GB WD Hard drive - No link, I got this at staples for $100. I've never actually completely filled my 280GB HDD before, so I don't really care that is is considered 'small'. Speed doesn't matter to me either, it is the difference between 10 seconds of boot up time.
GIGABYTE AMD Radeon 6870 - Not as powerful as the 6970 or 6990, but it runs Skyrim at max settings without lag. Only downside is this particular model has its fans exposed. The case has very good wiring holes though, so I'm not worried.

Everything I bought was discounted in one way or another, so it actually came to under $1000.

Work?

You didn't go with an i7? I thought they're only around $350.

Work?

I told my parents that I was trying to build a computer about 2 months ago. For Christmas they ended up buying the case and PSU (about $250 in total). They got it from Best Buy, but they are still really good. My relatives ended up sending a little over $400 too (I have a lot of relatives). Over my vacations, I intern at Hamilton Storage by programming test procedures for these giant super freezers. I worked for 32 hours in total over vacation for about $10 an hour. That brought the total amount I could spend to $720 + the $250 already spent.

Side note, I also used some Best Buy gift cards to get a nice 23" Acer monitor. Looks really good.

I planned out the parts weeks in advance. I picked an i5 because a gaming computer doesn't really need to use the processor as much as if it was going to be used as a work station. I think of i7 processors as being mostly for prosumers who work on high end programs like Photoshop, Final Cut, Sony Vegas, and other memory intensive applications. but from a technical side, an i7 really won't be much different than an i5 (assuming you're comparing the 2600k to the 2500k). Overclocked, they pretty much reach the same performance level at over 5GHz, and from that point the only difference is that the i7 has hyper threading and the i5 doesn't. Very few games are optimized to use multiple threads.

Skyrim only takes about 40-60% of a single core's power according to my motherboard, so I'm not really worried about not spending the extra $100.

The motherboard was possibly the hardest thing to decide on. I had no real idea what the difference between certain motherboards were, and I barely had any real idea of what they even did other then connect all the parts together and hold the BIOs (and that hasn't really changed after finishing it). It pretty much came down to the P8P67 and the P8H67. I chose the P67 because the H67 couldn't over clock, so that was the difference between getting the 2500k and the normal 2500 (former can be over clocked, latter can't).

CHIM is the most baffling and ever stated logic for a series I have even seen yet.

It's so full of everything I can't even explain it but only with these basic lines.

Dark Souls is on-par with Morrowind in all but graphics. It doesn't even match up to Oblivion, let alone Skyrim.

Re: Skyrim

Hmmm guess I should be more specific. Let me count the ways why I prefer Dark Souls over Skyrim

1. Dark Souls is a JRPG

2. The guilds in Skyrim are a complete letdown.(For reasons I've stated few pages back)

3. The guards sound terrible in Skyrim. Compared to the Imperial guards in Oblivion.

4. Skyrim tends to send you to a room, don't give you any hints at all, and expect you to magically figure it out. There's no logic or puzzle solving involved. The flow of the game just STOPS. In Dark Souls. You at least have a given direction in nearly all times.

5. The NPCs in Skyrim are boring. All they do is *bleep* about their problems/personal life that I don't give a *bleep* about. In Dark Souls. The NPCs(What little there were) were interesting and give you some background on the world. Which is what NPCs are supposed to do.

6. 90% of the sidequests in Skyrim are meaningless fetch quests.

7. Item Crafting in Skyrim is crap. The only one that's worth a *bleep* was Smithing but you'll get good stuff only when you max it out. Enchanting was worthless as you can find other enchanted stuff in dungeons. And Alchemy is pointless. In Dark Souls the item crafting was practically a necessity.

8. The main plot in Skyrim(Or what little I've seen) is pretty uninteresting. I never feel motivated to really do anything to save the world. In Dark Souls there is very little plot. But I'd rather have no plot than a bad plot anyday.

9. You can pretty much go headlong into a dragon wildly attack and it will die without a scratch on you. In Dark Souls. There's actual stragedy involved. What magic should I attune? Is this enemy weak to fire or lightning? There's experimentation involved unlike Skyrim were you can just pick a weapon, some armor at random and you'll be fine.

10. Skyrim is buggy mess. Dark Souls is not.

Sorry to hit a sore spot, but don't get butthurt over the fact that Dark Souls can't even stand up to Demon Souls.

You're playing Skyrim on Novice or possibly Apprentice mode.
You are also playing it on a console. Probably a PS3?
I can also tell that you are playing a melee warrior?
Psychology 101 - Your list has exactly 10 things, therefore I am guessing that you haven't actually inspected these elements? Especially since a lot of your complaints seem overtly unlikely.

Dark Souls isn't even much of a JRPG. It is more of an action-adventure game, and I would put it on the terms of Deus Ex: HR. But I'll send Japan your condolences.

Re: Skyrim

Skyrim involves using a brain. If you don't have one, visit Wal*Mart.
I'm just joking. But your arguments ... even I disagree with. And I barely got
to play the game. You said the game throws you into a room expecting you to
magically figure it out. My friend, who has played every Elder Scrolls game,
got lost and I ended up figuring out stuff for him even though I knew nothing
about what was going on. Maybe your mind is stuck on one solution that is wrong.

No. I expect them to actually give me information instead of them *bleep*ing about their problems. If the protagonist doesn't give a crap. Why the hell should I give a crap too? Pretty much only the barkeep gives you gossip on quests and such.

Look at TWEWY. One of the many reasons why I hate it is because the NPCs are useless. Whats the point of being able to read minds if they got nothing intersting to say? They completelly made a mechanic that is talked about often in the plot complettley pointless.
