My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
Hello,
My friend gave me his DualShock 2 controller for the PS2 system, and after some internet searching, i found out that it "works" for PS1.
Problem is, it does not work, the Analog button lights up on it, and in Spyro, i just keep charging forever and turning to the right.
The analog sticks does work, but i still keep running to the right.
So the START button and analog sticks only work, nothing else.
And i tried it in other games, and it does not work at all, no buttons whatsoever.
So help me, is the controller broken, or am im trying the wrong games? (Spyro games, harry potter, etc etc, for ps1)

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
Thank you for the response!
I already got two Playstation 1 controllers, but they are not dualshock.
I know i could try to buy some dual shock controllers that are MADE for the PS1
But i read everywhere that they SHOULD be backwards compatible.
So im wondering, anyone here tried Spyro with a playstation 2 controller?

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
I'm sorry, i will try to clearify.
I only own a PS1
I wanted to try a PS2 controller for my PS1.
Apparently most people agree that it should work.
Mine does not work correctly.
Is it broken, or does it usually not work on Spyro games?
Sorry if i was a bit unclear.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
I've always assumed there was basically no difference between PS1 and PS2 controllers. I use PS1 controllers in my PS2 all the time and they work perfectly fine. I'd try it the other way around and let you know, but unfortunately I don't have my PS1 with me. If the controller was incompatible, though, I would think nothing would happen at all, so I assume it's a problem with your controller.
Sticking analog sticks is a common problem with controllers. Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in? That usually fixes that problem. Sometimes the stick is pointing slightly in one direction when the controller is plugged in and the console will assume that that position is the center, causing your character to run slightly in the opposite direction.
Oh, a few things you could test: does the D-pad work if you turn off the analog? (Does the analog button even work?) Is there any way you could try the controller in a PS2?

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
Analog sticks work by using a potentiometer. What this does is give a value from -1 to 1 in each dimension. But because it's not digital, it can have decimal values too. Because of this, it can get very a value despite it being at point 0. To facilitate this, each time you plug in the device, the current position of the analog stick is set to 0. The first thing you should try is replug it in.
If this doesn't work, I'm pretty bored. I'm taking about my DS2 controller as I type this to see exactly what's going on.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
You just repeated exactly what I suggested but added more detail about how it works. Way to try to make me look like I know nothing. ![]()

Only read the OP's posts ![]()
I also took apart my controller to get a good view of it. I'll post some images in a moment.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
I have tried unplugging and also i have tried turning of analog sticks and using Dpad.
The only button that seems to work is the START button
I will get a Playstation 2 soon, then i can test and see if the controller is broken or not.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
Might as well try an emulator.
There are no PS2 emulators out there [just scams], but I have a PS1
emulator that I play on. It has its bios and the plugins you need for it to run
correctly. In short: I already set it up for you to use.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
So, has anyone actually ever tried using a PS2 controller for a PS1? Does it work?

Outside of the world of ROMs, there are plenty of PS2 emulators. Just because you are required to own the actual game CD doesn't mean it's a scam
I was playing Okami on PCSX2 last week.

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
Quick update guys and dudettes!
The controller was broken, nothing worked exept the vibration.
The second controller i got worked, exept that the vibration was over.
So it turns out my neigbor gaming girl owes me alot of things, so she gave me one of her controlles, that makes for one functional controller.
I email the guy who sent me the other defect controller, and hes sending a new one to me now.
Problem solved, i dont know if you guys lock threads or anything on these forums, but feel free to keep talking about emulations and stuff!
Thanks!

Re: My Dualshock2 controller for PS1
If people want to keep talking about emulators they should probably make a new thread to do so, but I'll leave this open anyway. Glad your problem was solved. ![]()
