Also I guess there weren't any gemstones in the wagon in that picture... But my question provides the answer to your question. He needs the cart because he's helping Rarity carry a bunch of gemstones.

Dragons (or at least Spike) eat gems, but in that scene Spike is collecting them for Rarity so she can use them in her outfit designs.

Wikipedia's slightly wrong about that; in the show one of the ponies actually hatches his egg for an entrance exam to a magic school, and he becomes her assistant after that.

Of course it seems strange. You don't watch the show enough for the world it takes place in to not seem strange. Any cartoon, or anything in any fantasy world for that matter, is that way. Imagine explaining Ents (tree like creatures who guard a sacred forest) to someone who knows nothing about Lord of the Rings.

To explain, Spike isn't really shown as a creature even, he's got a very human personality, as do all the ponies.
