So I'm talking to a friend, and she's distracted. I ask her why, and she's got one hell of a problem. A friend of hers, who has a history of poor life choices, is secretly engaged to some bloke in a different country. Let's call my friend Jill and Jill's friend Lucy.

Lucy is underage. Lucy has not told her parents, who it is presumed would go batshit if they found out. Lucy is very set on getting married, and no amount of persuasion from Jill is helping. Jill is equally set on preventing the marriage, but also wants to stay friends. She sees no solution to the issue.

What follows is a rough conversation between us on the subject:
Me: All right, so we could either break the attraction between them or place some kind of barrier between them. It's not possible to seduce either of them into cheating, seeing as how one is foreign, and the other is not likely to take the bait. Persuasion has done nothing to affect the attraction, but we haven't yet tried to erect a barrier. The parents are a powerful force in this circumstance, so I'd just tell them.
Jill: But she'll find out, because I'm one of the only ones who knows. I don't want to alienate her.
Me: Hmmm, okay, so we need to make the reveal to her parents without implicating you. I have an idea. You take Lucy out and get her totally drunk. Like, "what happened last night" drunk. And then take her home. Chuck her in her bed, and then tell the parents about the engagement. Tell them that you want to stay friends, and for this reason, you'd like them to lie. Ask them to pretend that Lucy told them about the engagement while drunk. The parents will then use the legal power they have to prevent the marriage, and they should feel a sense of gratitude that will obligate them to lie to Lucy. If all goes well, you'll get off scot-free.
Jill: That's very nearly an evil plan.
Me: Thanks. Let me know if you need someone to drink her under the table.

the plan is based on the idea that the situation will end at the end of the plan.

Lucy may hear her parents say no, and then proceed to run away crying that her parents AWR LYEK TOE-TALLY NAWT. KEWL. and then still keep talking to him, which obviously won't help things.

and who knows what prince charming is going to do once the evil stepmother has tried to split them apart. he could respect their decision, or choose to go against it.

things will probably get better in time, but the problem will probably still go on much longer than the solution.

That's not the point, the point is to get the friendship more or less secured, and to shift knowledge of the issue to those with the power to deal with it. The problem is taken out of Jill's hands and put into the hands of legal guardians.

The important thing is that if executed perfectly, my plan greatly improves the chances of the marriage not going ahead, without compromising Jill's position.

I think I play too many war games. This kind of vocabulary comes to me naturally.
