Purple (magenta) is actually a pure negative color, one of the three that make up white.

So umm... Anyone see anything wrong with this story:

I don't know what photosynthesise is. But I bet that Netoryguy is a plant. That guy looked pretty green the last time I saw him.

Color can be defined a bunch of ways.

There are the negative colors; Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. When combined, these colors create black.
Then there are the positive colors; Red, Green, and Blue. When these combine, they are white.

However, that is only for a limited range of applications. Machines such as computers and biological systems such as our eyes use this system of colors.

But think of an artist. They don't usually combine Red, Green, and Blue. They combine Red, YELLOW, and Blue, which are the Primary Colors.
Orange, Green, and Magenta are considered secondary colors in this case.

However, the scientific way to look at it is the visible spectrum:

spectrum.jpg

There is no white there, and likewise there is no black. Those are not considered colors in this sense. Black is considered a positive SHADE, and white is considered the negative shade. This is the scientific way to look at color.

Re: General Discussion 5

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_color
Red, blue and green are additive, and combinations of any two of these result in a subtractive color, magenta, cyan, and yellow.  When two of these subtractive colors are mixed, they result in an additive color.  Monitors use the additive system, while printers use the subtractive system.

The kind most are accustomed to is pigment color mixing.  Neotyguy40 explained that, but the secondary colors are green, orange and violet, not magenta.

Actually, violet is a spectral color. An equal amount of blue and red pigmentation would have to create an extra-spectral color like magenta. Otherwise the blue would actually be slightly closer to cyan, which would make a very unsaturated violet.

However, I thought about it again and realized you were right. It isn't magenta, so it has to be an artificial color. Probably purple.

I am not scientifically minded like you, but I do say that white is not a color.
But allow me to bring out a dictionary reference:

"dictionary.reference.com" says that color is:
the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the
object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and
brightness of the reflected light; saturation or chroma; hue.

This explains that the question "Is white a color?" is really an opinion, or is
judged on a person's state of mind/mindset.

Re: General Discussion 5

I also said "or, blahblahblah." because I figured it is most likely not an
opinion. But to me, it seems like people's arguments about whether or not
White is a color is simply based off of what kind of perspective they have of
it (or in other words: what kind of background they have). Just like my link
says, an artist may see it as a color and a scientist may see it as not ...
hence my idea about it being an opinion. I don't think us humans have a
solid explanation for such an argument.

But ... I just found this. Wikipedia says that white is a color:
