British Voting Referendum
Hooray for politics.
Our Government over in Britain is having a quarrel. For the first time ever, we are under a coalition government, so voting referendums are more likely now, with Liberal Democrat power, than any other time.
For those of you outside Britain, let me give you the situation. Currently, the voting system to decide government is pretty much like the US, as far as I can tell. The parties try to win specific constituencies (states for you Americans), and the party with the most wins. Currently, the system of voting in each constituency is called first past the post. Basically, winner takes all. If you get more votes than anyone else, you win.
In the new system, the alternate vote, or AV system, a candidate has to get more than 50% of the vote to win. What if nobody gets more than that? Well, the lowest scoring candidate is eliminated. A voter can vote for a secondary party. If their first choice is eliminated, their second choice gets their vote.
So, our government has decided to run a referendum, a public vote on the matter. Should we stick to FPP or swich to AV. The importance of this cannot be overestimated. Some argue that AV system will allow more moderate parties to win, more in line with the public opinion, but it will also force several more constituencies. But the FPP system is deemed unfair, as parties that didn't get the majority of the vote can still win.
So, the referendum is planned for 5th of May. What is your opinion on this historic, and very important matter?

Yeah, the whining finally paid off. SR's dropping the ban on politics for a while, just to see how it goes.

It's over in Site Help. SR posted that he officially unbanned the topic temporarily. I have pics and everything.
