3DS not suitable for kids.

Read in USA Today that Nintendo has said that the 3DS is not intended for kids 6 year or younger, probably because it's not good for their vision.

Does anyone else find this ironic?

Slightly. You can take your kids to a 3D movie like how to train your dragon but they cant use a much smaller and less blinding and bright of light from a *cough lame cough* Ds. *cough Psp for the win cough*

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

It's only a matter of time before someone in this thread tries to legitimize the stupid and nonsensical argument that the 3DS transmits brain-frying rays or signals. No one say a word on this, or you'll get a huge rant from me.

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

I'm not interested in a 3DS at all until a game that I'm interested in is announced for it.

But yeah, I wouldn't give a kid under 6 a DS anyway. Kids that little probably don't need to be playing video games yet, especially not handheld games where you usually have to read to understand what's going on.

*cough no one cares about your choice in gaming consoles. I think everyone who actually argues about that is just wasting their time, especially since it won't change anyone's opinions and will either be:

a. ignored
b. cause of flaming

Ohh, and cough*

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

I am starting to think this 3D stuff is becomeing like the HD rave. When HD was created suddenly it was the best thing and everything was starting to switch. Now that we found out about 3D and how to make it better and use it on movies, Tv, and games Now its becoming hype of these next few years till every thing is in 3D.

Except 3D gives me, and a lot of other people, headaches.  HD actually reduces headaches.

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

It may take time, but I'm almost positive that 3D is not just a fad.  Like HD, it's becoming a must for entertaining households and eventually, like HD is now, a non-consideration when buying a new TV monitor.  If you're looking to buy a non-HD TV, you'll be paying under $100 US for it unless you get ripped off.  If you can find one, that is.

As for the headaches and hurting of eyes, I'm sure people complained on eye strain when TV's first came out.  But seeing as 3D technology is still in it's infancy, or at the most preteenage years, I'm willing to bet whatever problems people have will be solved through time.

I'm most impressed with the idea of glasses not needed.  I was afraid that it would be impossible to watch 3D content without looking like a total dork.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone under six's eyes hadn't developed enough to take the illusion without some sort of damage being caused to their eyes.

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

Don't forget that you have the option to reduce or take out the 3D effect altogether if you dislike it.

Well isn't this always the tragedy of a rapidly evolving technology industry? This applies to pretty much any new gizmo.

What's the point of having a 3D display hand-held console? I can understand people wanting to make TV screens have 3D images but hand-held consoles with 3D sounds stupid in my opinion.:/

Yeah, if a five year old watches things in 3D too much, they may be stuck seeing everything in 3D for the rest of their life.  Wait a minute...

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

3D Games??? We are getting ever closer to those Virtual reality games we saw in those shows of the future >.<

Seems kind of pointless. But everytime something new comes out or is implemented, there is some health concern or whatnot.

Either way, I won't be playing many 3D games at all (If Any)... And If the parents let the children play the games that supposedly 'hurt' their eyes, then they better not think of suing or anything.

Interesting.
Hehe, I bet if all we ever saw was 8-bit then suddenly it went to 3D, it would seem weird.

Same reason why parents give a 5 year old a cell phone.  Times are crazy they are.  You'd be surprised how low the average age has gotten for kids getting their first cell phone.  In America anyways...

2960324558-9b81264de9-b.jpg

The user population for the DS spikes at around 10 or 11 years of age, with little discrimination for kids who are younger.  The graph only shows as low as 6 years old, but it's almost understood that 4 and 5 year olds are getting their hands on them as well.

nintendo-ds-age-gender-distribution.jpg

This graph was put together by Nintendo in April of 2009.

Re: 3DS not suitable for kids.

Interesting how there's a decrease DS users for young adults, but increases for middle-aged adults. Also interesting how females keep up the interest in the DS well into the 70s, whereas gramps stop around the late 60s.

Also, I was a bit surprised but pleased in the trend that the ratio of male to female players is evening up (at least for the DS/DSi); even so, there's still the stereotype that video games are for males, probably because males tend to have a more competitive nature.
