General Ignorance Thread

If any of you don't know what I mean by general ignorance, I mean that it is a question you would ask and you would expect to get a typical answer, which turns out not to be true. For instance: what is a five pound note made out of? It's not paper, it is made out of cotton fibre.

I thought it would be good to post general ignorance questions and answers. Here's a few to set you off...

How long can a chicken last without it's head?

The headless chicken recorded for living longest without its head survived roughly two years headless. It was named Mike, and as he was beheaded it missed an essetial nerve therefore allowing it to live providing it was fed and watered through drips. However, it eventually died from choking.

What's the largest thing a whale can swallow?

A car? A sofa? No, it's a grapefruit. Whales only have throats with a diameter around that of a dinner plate, therefore although they have enormous stomachs, their throats are small. Well, small-ish.

Which bird lays the smallest eggs in comparison to its size?

It turns out that it's an ostrich. Though they lay enormous eggs, their weight is less than 1.5% of its mother.
The largest egg compared with the size of the mother bird is that of the spotted kiwi. Its egg is 26% of its own weight: the equivalent of a woman giving birth to a six-year-old child.
