Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
I couldn't access this site for a while. I was worried it was shut down.
Even if it is passed, it's probably to shut down rom sharing sites and pirate sites. It's unconstitutional to ban unofficial fan clubs.
It was down for a while.

Which is why I couldn't access the site. I thought the government came to shut us down for exposing their conspiracy. but I thought that was a little farfetch'd.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
Alright, I'm growing tired of this nonsense. A topic that I started to try and let the users here, especially Spyrorocks and the moderators, know about a bill that has a possibility of affecting us. And yet, Clock-La, you, riverhippo and JazzJackRabbit have turned this topic into one of mindless spam, trolling and flaming. You deny the possibility of the bill having an effect on us. Just because Congress has not enforced other bills/laws, that does not guarantee that this also would not be enforced. What if this turned out to be the one that the U.S. government actually enforced, hmm? There's always that possibility.
I wasn't spamming or trolling or flaming. That brain monkeys comment was a joke.
It's true that past actions cannot guarantee future ones. I'm just saying it seems like a waste of taxes, and if it even goes through congress, (probably after this term is over) it probably won't be passed because it would have no effect, be a waste of money, and create no jobs. There would probably be lawsuits against the bill.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
Who cares?
I mean, who in congress cares about a site like this? Who in Activision cares about a forum like this? What would they get out of shutting down a site like this?
Doesn't it seem odd that this bill was passed just as the recent Pirate Bay fight went on? Connections... Oh, I see one! This bill was passed to give the government the ability to shut down pirating websites.

You know what? I give up. Just let this thread devolve into absolute nonsense. If someone isn't making a joke of this thread, someone's being very confrontational, such as Neotyguy. I'm done. Done with this thread, and done with this forum.

I'm sorry that I am "confronting" a topic that was posted. I will try to do better and not talk or think about the topic of the thread.
Look, I don't think that you are taking this rationally. Yes, I was pretty blunt in my previous post, and yes, people do make jokes. But why do you care? We are trying to reassure you there is nothing wrong, it's not like we are insulting or teasing you. We just truly believe that there is nothing to worry about.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
Raidon Makoto, Internet Attorney is here.

There's a thing called fair use. Because of Fair Use, creative sites like DeviantArt and SF would be unaffected by this law. Furthermore, for any case to be made in a court, the copyright owner would have to inform DOJ about the infringing site first, and then a suit would be brought up. It'd only happen if Vivendi wanted SF shut down, and theoretically, they already have the power to do that with the current DMCA.
SF is fine. Chillax.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
Oh wow, it's been forever since I've seen Raidon Makoto.
Anyhow, I really cannot decide which side of the fence I stand - I really want to say that this issue is blown out of proportion, but then again, I don't have any real reasoning to say so. The move might've had intentions to deter spammers/cybercrime (which in this case I don't think this is going to be an effective deterrent), but in any case, the opposition from users all over the internet is quite clear...I would bet and hope that it's a firm, unanimous stance. I hope this bill will never materialize.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
IT SHALL NOT COME TO PASS.
If this is passed, any politician that supports it - any well-known politician, that is - will be a prime target of the inevitable backlash. This looks bad, too, since it's likely to be compared with the censorship enforced in places such as China.

Re: News of a Most Distressing Matter
@riverhippo: Congress will shut down any and all sites they perceive to be committing copyright infringement, regardless of whether they are a U.S. domain or not, the way that bill is worded. They will first send a warning to the domain owner telling them to suspend operation and lock the domain. If the site is not closed, the District Attorney will then take the owner themself to court.
You forget that the lion's share of internet processes are run from the United States. Congress has the power, and if the bill is passed, they will use it.
dude, you just made a tweet retweet to riverhippo. are on twitter
?
oh and this is something that should be blogged about instead of it bein' on the forum, ya know? but that is something i never thought of them doing, isnt their some kinda internet privacy tthing to battle it off?
