Hurricane dean is long gone, it dissapated this morning over mexico.
dean was the first hurricane to make landfall as a category five hurricane since andrew in 1992. it made landfall as a 906mb cat.5 the 3rd strongest atlantic landfall of all time, behind the 1935 labor day hurricane, and gilbert in 1988.

Dean developed in the eastern tropical Atlantic and moved westward toward the Lesser Antilles by Friday, August 17 as a Category 2 hurricane. The islands of Martinique, St. Lucia and Dominica were especially hard hit.

From there, Dean pushed through the eastern Caribbean and impacted Jamaica as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday, August 19. The island was hit with high winds and heavy rain. Winds gusted as high as 138 mph in Kingston.

Hurricane Dean made its first landfall around 3:30 am (Central Time) Tuesday with 165 mile per hour winds near Costa Maya, Mexico. It is the first land falling category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin since Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida in 1992. Its pressure of 906 millibars is the third lowest pressure at landfall behind the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane in the Florida Keys and Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 in Cancun, Mexico.

The resorts of Cancun and Cozumel did not receive the full brunt of Hurricane Dean but tremendous waves (on the order of 15 to 25 feet) crashed along the shores resulting in severe beach erosion.

Dean emerged into the Bay of Campeche on Tuesday afternoon as a category 1 hurricane. Dean strengthened over the warm waters of the Bay of Campeche and reached category 2 status. Thankfully, Dean was considerably weaker during its second landfall than it was Tuesday during its first landfall when it was a monster category 5 hurricane.

Dean made its second landfall about 40 miles south-southeast of Tuxpan, Mexico at 11:30am (Central Time) along the coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz between the cities of Tampico and Veracruz. Maximum sustained winds at landfall were near 100 mph with a minimum central pressure of about 979 millibars.

Loneknight- no one on the east coast is totally safe, i live in va, and we get wind and rain from storms all the time. several major hurricanes have hit ma, ny, maine, and other new england states if you live on the us eat coast from texas to maine, you can be directly hit by a hurricane of any strenght. dont let your guard down, dont listen to people who say ''i cant be hit by a hurricane since i live up north'' your still in hurricane alley.

storms tend to turn northward towards the upper u.s. then curve away at the last minute, but still this could happen when high pressure prevents the storm from moving out into the mid atlantic, for example.

We had some harsh weather here in Georgia tonight. As me and my friend were driving back from practice, we almost got in numerous collisions due to the heavy downpour and crazy lighting. The whole sky lit up every 2 seconds.. literally.
It wasn't hard to tell that the lighting was touching ground within a mile radius. This was the first time that I ever felt nervous in a car.
And funny thing is is that we were only going about 5 mph.. On a highway.. In the night.

I live in Australia, so we don't get Hurricanes. But we had a really big Cyclone, Cyclone Tracy in the 80's I think.

I dont know whitch is worse, hurracane ally or tornaido ally [they are pretty much the same thing, but ....diffrent]

Worst that happens around here is the occasional dust devil and rooling tumbleweed [those things suck]

tornados can be 2 miles wide and are much more common, with winds up to 300mph
hurricanes can be up to 2500miles wide (tip) but have winds up to 200mph

It's pretty awesome. We have beaches and rivers and stuff. I live in the hills so there are heaps of trees, but there are deserts.

Heh, I much prefer the dry Arizona heat rather than the wet, humid Georgia heat, which is where I live.
It's usually around 90-95+ degrees without humidity. With humidity, the temperature goes up to 105+ degrees.. No fun at all. It gets so hot on some days that the school cancels all outside activites.
What makes it worse is that we're in a drought. hmm
