Rules that you live by.

I've seen an increase in specific "Life Guidelines" that people in my area have been creating. Personally, most of them are complete junk, but when I look at the person, and then look at what their rules are, I realize that it really says a lot about the person. So here's a question: What rules or guidelines do you live your life by? Here are mine:

1. Value Modesty
2. Value Maturity
3. Value Intellect
4. Value Honesty
5. Value Acceptance

These are my five "Big Values" that I really like to see in others. To me, my friends either have these traits, or they aren't my friend.

6. Don’t judge things by first impressions.
7. Don’t judge things by second impressions.
8. After a third impression, judge upon it heavily.

I put these three rules down because they are basically how I try to start acting whenever I see something. When I see a new website, then I usually get lost, and most people would just say it's crowded. The next day I come back and know my way around, but I am still finding new things. The third day? I decide whether I like it or not.

9. Never lie unless you absolutely have to.
10. If you must lie, make sure it’s detailed.
11. Your own personality, their personality, and what they have current knowledge of must be taken into effect when thinking of a lie.

This should be self explanatory, but it's what I do when I am in a communicative situation.

12. For every subject of every single thing in the universe, there are people who are complete idiots of it.
13. If there is no idiot on a specific subject, then it is common sense.
14. Not every person has common sense.

I love this one that I made. In shorter terms, not everyone knows about something, and if everyone does, some people still don't know about it. No exceptions.

15. Respect only those who respect you.
16. If you do not know if they respect you, then treat them with respect until you know their true personality.
17. If they don’t respect you, then point out flaws in each of their argument in a mature manner.

This is probably why I'm an introvert, but this holds truth in all matters.

18. When using a computer, always have 2 passwords.
19. The first password is for non-vital services such as games, forums, and anonymous accounts.
20. The second is for personal services such as the computer, email, and chat.

This is important to me. Just because it is.

21. Do not talk about your personal life.
22. Do NOT talk about your personal life.

I got this idea from Fight Club, and I put it twice because it is a VERY important rule to me.

23. Do not be a pessimist.
24. Do not be an optimist.
25. Be a realist.

I hate people that get depressed so easily and is so emotional about every little thing. I equally hate people who think "everything will be alright". It is either going to be good or going to be bad. If you can't tell whether it is going to be good or bad, then just adjust to it.

26. Have the one physical trait that separates you from the crowd.
27. Have the one mental trait that separates you from the crowd.

My physical trait: Comb-over. My mental trait: If I list this then it goes against my modesty value.

28. Always question your actions, even if not out loud.
29. Always question someone else’s actions, even if not out loud.
30. Look at every person’s point of view involved in a situation.

I always question every single action that takes place in my life. Sometimes I imagine a floating ball of light that acts as a sort of conscious, but not for moral values.

31. Always have a strategy.
32. Always have a back-up strategy.
33. If you have a second back-up strategy, your first two strategies are not good enough.
34. Do not waste too much time on a single strategy.

Strategy is a VERY important aspect of my life.

35. Slow and steady wins the race against the hasty.
36. Fast and steady wins the race against all.

It's good to think things through, but if you can't think through them quick enough then you will be left in the dust.

Rules 37-39 may be offensive to people. I will not post it.

40. Constantly absorb and learn.
41. If you are not constantly thinking, you are not constantly learning.
42. Control your own thoughts.

This is the base for pretty much all direct thinking.

43. Learn new technology. It is the future.
44. If you don’t learn new technology, technology will replace you.

I don't feel bad for those in my generation that aren't going to college, but in my mind, I KNOW that technology will replace them.

45. Avoid working with others on a activity that requires your mind.
46. Two combined minds are worse than two separate minds.

This is sort of hard to explain, so I'll leave you to ponder this.

I have no need to make my own guidelines. I go by the Holy Bible, also
known as the Word of God. It is loaded with wisdom, too.

Absolutely true!  I agre with Sawffy.
When I decide to go by my own rules everything goes down hill for me after awhile, and nothing feels right.  But when I started going by those rules in the Bible everything started changing dramatically for the better.
So those are my rules.

Re: Rules that you live by.

A pessimist isn't someone that complains about everything always being horrible. A pessimist is someone that EXPECTS bad things.

Let's say a person is called to the office of his or her boss. An optimist may think, finally, he recognizes my talents! A pessimist may think, Oh crap, I'm so screwed.

A pessimist is not someone that goes "Everything about my life is horrible because..." That would be a carper.

Anyways, my one rule would be to not limit myself with rules.

Re: Rules that you live by.

Rules? I'm not big on giving myself rules. Aims are more my thing, such as:

1. Gain a knighthood.
2. Publish a novel.
3. Wipe out awful novice philosophy, (OMG morls does nt pply 2 me!!!!1).

I suppose one might say I live my life in accordance to those aims.

It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living.

A pessimist is someone who stresses out the negative side of things. They don't just expect the bad things to happen in a future tense, but remember only the bad things in the past and only focus on the bad things in the present. It's not just future tense.

Re: Rules that you live by.

Yes, "expect bad things" was too limited. That doesn't mean that pessimists are carpers.

I'm a pessimist. I remember the worse moments of my life, and I expect bad things (for example, when I get that indication that I received a new PM, I expect it to be someone calling me out on some issue.) That doesn't mean I constantly complain about how much life sucks. You just have to suck it up and move on.

2) If I'm in a bad mood. Leave.

3) Don't stereotype

4) Don't *bleep* me off

5) Don't lie

6) Don't be a hypocrite

7) Don't try to impress me

8) Shut up if you don't know the correct answer

9) Who cares what people think

10) Don't pick a fight you have no chance of winning

11) Don't accuse me of hypocrisy

Re: Rules that you live by.

Here are a few of the rules that I try my best to live by. These are taken from Matthew chapter 5 in my Bible.

[hr:4d4e501807]
Teaching about Anger

[22] But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgement! If
you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the
high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of
hell.

[25] Come to terms quickly with your enemy before it is too late and you are
dragged into court, handed over to an officer, and thrown in jail.

[26] I assure you that you won't be free again until you have paid the last penny.

Teaching about Adultery
[28] But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has
already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Teaching about Divorce
[31] "You have heard that the law of Moses says, 'A man can divorce his wife by
merely giving her a letter of divorce.'

[32] But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful,
causes her to commit udultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman
commits adultery.

Teaching about Vows
[34] But I say, don't make any vows! If you say, 'By heaven!' it is a sacred vow
because heaven is God's throne.

[35] And if you say, 'By the earth!' it is a sacred vow because the earth is His
footstool. And don't swear, 'By Jerusaslem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the
great King.

[36] Don't even swear, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black.

[37] Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Your word is enough. To
strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.

Teaching about Revenge
[39] But I say, don't resist an evil person! If you are slapped on the right cheek,
turn the other, too.

[40] If you are ordered to court and your shirt is taken from you, give your
coat, too.

[41] If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.

[42] Give to those who ask, and don't turn away from those who want to borrow.

Teaching about Love for Enemies
[44] But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

[45] In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For
He gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the
just and on the unjust, too.

[46] If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax
collectors do that much.

[47] If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone
else? Even pagans do that.

[hr:4d4e501807]
There is more in chapter 6, but these are a few things I try to follow.

lol this reminds me when i was in preschool and called a kid an idiot because he wouldn't let me crawl through the tunnel on the playground so I got a lecture from the teachers

[26] I assure you that you won't be free again until you have paid the last penny.

also idk why i remember this but I remember this being in godspell

1. Stick to my morals.
2. Don't give up.

Also, I don't really try to live by this rule; it's just kind of the way I think:

Question everything you think you know, because you can never be 100% sure that you're correct.

Re: Rules that you live by.

Here are my rules that I follow:

1) When you're proven wrong, try to accept it.
2) Do not care about judgement.
3) Words will only harm you if you let them.
4) Remorse is good.
5) When in doubt, listen to Darkspace.
6) If that fails, switch to Sunn O)))
7) Try not to forget.
8) Take it like a man.
9) Have a little fun
10) When necessary, take the p1ss.
11) Crying is not bad(I can't remember that last time I did that tbh).
12) Whenever you do something hypocritical, do what Leroy Jethro Gibbs does and slap yourself on the back of the head.
13) Talk about yourself in the third person whenever you're bored.
14) LISTEN! You can learn some good things from others.
15) If everybody hates you, to hell with them.

These rules are in the third person, btw.

Don't ruin your life by listening to what others say about you. You are who you are, and no one can change that. You get way higher in life by being yourself than following those idiots that you don't like or the other way round.
