Re: The Earth is changing...

Whether you believe in climate change or not, the mutation of bacteria is defiantely our own fault.

Evolution is driven by outside factors, again my memories of what the actual term is escape me (Oh, thanks for the heads-up bmah. The term rings a bell, but I finished college a year or so ago so most of the technical terms escape me! big_smile ), these evolution pressures in their environment force organisms to adapt and change to survive. For example, when you are given antibiotics the first thing you are told is to finish your course. This is to make sure that it kills all of the bacteria, because some will have a higher tolerance to it than others. If you don't finish the course of antibiotics then these 'resistant bacteria' survive and multiply; hey presto you have screwed yourself over by letting yourself get infected with resistant bacteria.
This keeps happening and happening and eventually you get strains of bacteria that are resistant to most antibiotics, they are then given the name 'super-bugs'. An example of this is MRSA which is resistant to most forms of antiseptic and a lot of other bacteria are resistant to penicillin, the once 'miracle drug'. The bacteria wouldn't have developed the immunities if we hadn't over/mis-used the drugs, so that's our fault right there.
Viruses are trickier, because there are NO cures for them, literally. When you are given things for viruses, they only lessen or slow its reproduction cycle, they don't kill it; your body has to do that itself. It's theorised that because humans keep digging up the ground to build things they are unearthing viruses. But as I said, it's theory only, there's no real proof.

That's the main argument for the damage climate change causes; things are changing so rapidly that animals aren't having time to adapt and so are dying out instead of evolving. Then again, I don't really know how we're going to slow it down now, A Guy's reasoning of our view of 'it won't make a difference' really comes into play there.

I find this CO2 thing worth nothing. And IF it's true, we humans only produce up to 30% of the CO2, nature does the rest.

Correction: human facilitates or triggers certain events, in which nature does the rest thereafter. In essence, that's mankind's doings.

e.g. melting of permafrost --> all of the stored carbon from peat bogs in the northern tundra released

Events trigger other events (domino effect), and in turn, more CO2 is released. Also, CO2 is not the only significant greenhouse gas. Water vapor and methane are other examples, methane of which is many folds more potent than CO2.

And as I said, blame game on who releases more CO2 is useless. It's reducing the rate of production, not how much is produced.

Lol at the scientific fail. Global warming and holes in the ozone layer are two different issues, totally unlinked. Global warming is caused by a build up of greenhouse gases, and the holes in the ozone layer cause increased levels of UV rays, causing higher levels of skin cancer.

Global warming is real, and potentially devastating, but our effect on it isn't that large. For instance, the Kyoto protocol, if it had been fully successful wouldn't have bought us more than two years, if I recall correctly, when compared against a complete failure.

However, as it tends to, science may turn up a solution, such as the sulphurous chimneys to the sky, or chemical trees. Or maybe if we all went vegetarian, that would work too. When the human race is in danger, it's never the enviromentalists that save the day. It's always the engineers, chemists, physicists, economists, and socialogists. Maybe the biologists too.

It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living.

Re: The Earth is changing...

This topic is really interesting , that's why I like to post in it !

Aceedwin is right , it's not in economizing our electricity in turning off computers instead of putting them in sleep mode and in eating 5 fruits and vegetables (remind me some guignol's sketch) that we will save the world...

People does like 20% of the pollution while industries does the remaining 80%...And with the excesive individualism of our society , it's not like we're going to stop them anyways , we fear to lose the relative comfortableness of our lives and fight for our interest against the guys who can stop everything , but won't , because they evaluate that if they became rich , you can become rich by yourself as well.

Correct , right ? Act , or watch your world dieing under your eyes. How ? Good question... When ? Now. Alone ? Yes at first , but people will join you after , if you can persude them. Is it that simple ? Sadly no...

Re: The Earth is changing...

In one hand, anything could happen and I mean anything. There is a chance the Myans were right, but no. All there are the Myan calender that is the only hard evidence they have. But, in my opinion, no 2012, in my idead. Something will happen, something really terrible. But not the end of the world maybe a tsunami, a volcanic eruption stronger than Krakatoa? Possibilties are endless, and to be quite frank the world isn't going to come falling down on our heads anytime soon.

But 2012, is so overhyped because of the media, media these days are much more important than it was hundreds of years ago. We have internet now. Where info passes instantaneously, I could easily post all over the internet in major sites around the net and a good 12% of people would believe me! The big 2012 thing probably all started when some loser posted it somewhere on the net, someone read it anf believed, informed thier mates who informed thier mates and so forth. Hell, I could even whip out Adobe Photoshop and forge a bunch of photos revealing an army of Vampires summouning forth from the earth, so get what I'm saying. People will just have to get on with thier lives as technology and communication improves that barely any Doomsday theories on the internet should be adhered to it all, if any.

Confused? Well, just to sum it up, the world isn't ending and it won't. Because some people really have some balls to forge evidence to support claims. Get me yet?

I agree with you. This whole 1210 thing is really getting on my nerves. Not to long ago, my friend told me that the world is going to end in 1210, and I ask her, " what proof to do you have to know it's going to end on that specific year? " and she said ," It said it on the internet ".

The look I gave her: ಠ_ಠ.....You people are so easily manipulated.

Re: The Earth is changing...

You are correct there. The 2012 thing is annoying. It means nothing. The Mayans could have easily have contiued thier calender if they had some time, too bad they got wiped out.
No 2012, just some fat attention seeker in his garage.
Not long ago, I got told aliens were going to invade in 2009, at 09.09.09, but nothing happened. People are very manupulitive. On the site, that claimed that the world is going to end, put fake photos on the computer to try to prove thier point. Now I can't find the site or anything to do with it, what a suprise.

Re: The Earth is changing...

That's what happen when some peoples wants to attract the puplic attention.
Take an iconic date , put a spectacular/unusual event in it and spread it well : you obtain what happen today. An annoying bunch of narrow-minded people who believe it hardly without any proves.
It's a proof that masses are influencable , and you don't have an idea on how true it is. How could the Second World War happen without some masses' manipulations and propaganda ? It wouldn't , people just wouldn't agree with that little guy who is a dangerous man that was in prison a little sooner.
It's as simple as that. Masses are there , offering opportunities of global manipulation at any moment , for any cause.
Happily , governments acted so badly that everybody is stuck right into a wave of falses and messed up informations now.
Unless you can motivate these people and catch their attention...They won't act really much for you. They may demonstrate , but it ends here...Individualism broke this solidarity , preventing us into joining a common cause before a while.

To sum up : don't pay attention to this and ignore them. Nothing will happen...Or so little. Nature doesn't have our calendar ; neither does the aliens and the vampires , I guess ; they have a different one , if they ever exist , the Nature doesn't have any , up to now...
Sometimes it mades me wonder how people can lure others to trust such completely non-sense things , that's just amazing...
