The Night Game
Mysteria wandered silently through the twilight. The pad of her feet was eerie and unnatural-sounding in the tense silence. Tessina suddenly appeared amongst drifts of black smoke. Tessina often did this, dissapearing and not showing until you were sure she had gone, and then she'd appear right in front of your face and cackle in delight over the startled scream or yelp you gave.
Mysteria scarcely blinked.
"So," she said. "You came."
Tessina scutted up to her on her black paws.
"It appears I did," she said, her scowling face an inch away from Mysteria's.
"Cynder isn't here, though," Mysteria sighed.
"Of course, the stupid drip pushed off with that purple ponce and thought it best to shove it all out of her mind."
"It's her son," Mysteria cried. "Doesn't she care that he's a Shadow Beauty?"
"She doesn't give a toss about that - and I can just about accept it, but the fact that it's Ma-"
"Don't even say it! It makes me feel sick inside, so shut up!"
"It's Malefor's," Tessina hissed, insisting on saying it out loud despite the fact that the same words had been shrieking in Mysteria's mind for the last week.
"Yes," Mysteria snapped irritably. "It's Malefor's - and he's had it in his care for it's whole life so there's no prize for guessing what it will act like."
"But it's a Shadow Beauty, not your usual fire-and-fear job. It's stronger and rarer than a purple dragon, for God's sake," Tessina spat.
"Yes, I know, I know, it can create worlds and illusions and it's got twilight breath - so what do you propose we do about it?" Mysteria sighed.
"Why should we do anything? It's Cynder's bloody mess - let her clean it up."
"She's not going to! Both you and I know that Cynder wouldn't clear this mess up if we paid her with her weight in gold - gems, whatever - and we also know that though we'd like to, we aren't going to sit and watch the world disintergrate before us."
"I could - I've seen that happen before," Tessina mumbled, her voice cracking as her yellow eyes lost their wicked glitter.
Tessina was a Fear dragon, and a very hurt, angry one. Dragons can only become Fears if something truly crushing and horrible happens to them - and for Tessina, it was the death of her family before her very eyes (minus her sister - Mysteria).
She saw the claws swiping at each other as ribbons of blood spurted high in the air. A long, slender, obsidian-black figure gave throaty roars as she harshly slashed Tessina's parents with her hooked claws, thumped them with her long tail and stabbed them with the curled points of her wings. Her parents, torn and bleeding, lay slumped on the floor with broken limbs and torn wings to ensure they couldn't escape. Tessina was unharmed pysically - but a searing pain flooded her on the inside, the sheer hurt of loosing everything and more so - betrayal.
The bony black dragon raised its head, pointing it towards Tessina's parents. Her mother summoned her leftover power and screamed.
"RUN TESS!"
"No!" Tessina squeaked, tears spurting down her pale primrose cheeks (Tessina has before been a mere Electric dragon, with electric-blue, lightning bolt scars across her back and jerky gold horns with enormous, frosty-blue eyes. She had wings with a blue-bone outside and a leathery gold inside, a frayed, shredded look on the wing-skin.)
The black dragon did not notice Tessina. There was a sharp intake of breath...
"RUN TESS, RUN NOW!" her mother shrieked, and then added forlornly. "Do as your mother says," and started sobbing.
The black dragon blew out her breath and their small cave was illuminated by scarlet light and consumed by fire and smoke. Tessina had leapt into the air just as the fire had filled the hut, and had escaped through the crack in the ceiling where the black dragon had smashed through.
The Black Dragon, The Night Demon, The Terror of the Skies...
Cynder.
Cynder, her own sister, had killed her own mother (she had another father, the same as Mysteria's) for all for the jewels in her cave.
"EVIL WITCH!" Tessina sobbed, as she saw Cynder streaking through the sky clutching a large clump of glittering jewels.
Tessina's flight slowed and she began to fall, down, down, down into the black sea that had once been a true, gleaming, sapphire-blue. She lay on the shore, half on the sand with the waves lapping against her legs like freezing blanket.
She looked very different when she woke up.
Her scales were crimson despite the black on her legs, that melted into its deep maroon at the knees. Her wings were a jet-black and dark red, coming up on huge stalks with sharp blades on the tip of her wing. Her claws were curled and hooked and her tail long an thin, with a sharp point on the end. Her eyes were large, glowing and acid-yellow, with long, sooty lashes curling off the lids. Out of the corner of each eye dark black spirals and curls shot out of it, embellished with tiny black stars. They looked drawn, but were actually marked into her skin.
She continued to change personality-wise too, becoming more angry and offended at everything. It was only until she met Mysteria when everything changed - but that's another story.
"Don't cry," Mysteria said gently.
"I'm not," Tessina lied.
It was then they heard it, a scuttling of clawed feet and a strange, ringing sound not of this world.
"Oh no," Mysteria said. "He's here."
"What?" Tessina sniffed. "He can't be, why would he be?"
"They're testing a theory," Mysteria said knowledgably. "And we're the guinea pigs."
"What theory?"
Mysteria was gifted with the Inner-Sight and was able to faintly see things before they happened (though not always accuratly).
"The theory called...the Night Game?"
"What's th-"
And then a blast of blue-tinted lightning shot horisontally through the trees. The shot sprawled out like real lightning, a crackle hitting either Tessina or Mysteria with amazing force. The Shadow Beauty leapt into the air, hovered for a moment on his feathery black wings, and then felt to the floor, flexing his wings forwards and capturing Tess and Mysteria in a milky-white sphere. There were some strange humming noises and the sphere broke, so the Shadow Beauty whipped round and took off into the sky.
"Cootchy coo, baby," Tessina mumbled sarcastically, her words breaking up.
"Now...what?" Mysteria's murmured weakly.
And then, Tess and Mysteria's head lolled in unison and their eyes rolled like marbles their head and the exact same pace. Then, they passed out.
Or did they?
