Virus Help?

Hey guys, long time no posting.

There's a virus going around from a fake program called AntiVirus System Pro, and anyone that got it on their computer somehow has been attacked since around the 20th of November.

I happen to have this virus, and I need help.

I've been googling for answers, and once I almost wiped it out, but it came back.

I have Kaspersky, but not installed. I was going to disable IE to disable popups, along with removing McAfee so that I could install Kaspersky, but I can't access Add/Remove programs OR safe mode because of this virus. I'm also incapable of doing a system restore.

Right now, I'm writing this on a backup laptop, in case you're wondering.

If anyone knows how to properly deal with this and knows a method that works (aside from taking it into a shop) please tell me. Thanks.

Re: Virus Help?

Put combofix on a usb drive, plug it in, and run. It usually does the job.

Re: Virus Help?

IIRC, when I used combofix, the program warned me that there was like a 5% chance that using it could wipe out the computer memory or something like that. Whatever, I went ahead and it fixed whatever virus I had on that one occasion.

Re: Virus Help?

My recommendation would be Do what they were saying but before you do that, get an external hard drive and copy your valuables into it. Then do that program. I have an external hard drive because when my dad downloaded about 1000 songs from lime wire we got almost over 100 viruses and had to get the computer whipped.... the anti virus program wouldn't work because it was like butting a baby against a sumo wrestler. So hope it inst that series and you have to get it clear4ed back to factory settings.

Re: Virus Help?

I already have an external harddrive with all my music and movies on it, but thanks.

SR: Thanks, but I just googled and went to the site and when I clicked the link, it took me to bleepingcomputer, and I didn't see the download link on there...and when I right clicked it wouldn't give me the option to save like it says it would...

Sorry if I sound like an idiot but where can I download this properly?

Heheh, that's comical.

Aside from that... Google should give you the primary download source.
Also, are you sure you have the right things on your computer that give
you the ability to download items from the Internet?

Re: Virus Help?

Uhhh
you don't need any programs to download files.

http://www.combofix.org/download.php

Actually, I bet the initial link worked; you have to right-click and "save as" in order to actually download the file. I did a quick check, so this works.

Re: Virus Help?

...no I right clicked and there is no 'Save As' there's only 'Save Link As' and it saves as a firedfox document that opens the instructions that the word already links...

"Firefox can't find the file at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2827825/ComboFix.exe."

Maybe SendSpace?

Re: Virus Help?

If all else fails, reformat your hard drive. It'll erase everything, but this includes the virus.

Try that link I made. I enclosed combofix in a zip file and put it on Sendspace. If that doesn't work, then the problem is likely from your end.
