What is your favorite computer OS?
I made this thread because I saw a thread just like this, but it only had a few choices.
I'm not putting really old ones, so I am going to go with these options:
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows XP
Mac OS X Tiger
Mac OS X Leopard / Snow Leopard
Ubuntu (Linux)
OpenSUSE (Linux)
Fedora (Linux)
Linux Mint (Linux)
FreeBSD (Linux)
Other (Linux)
Other (Windows)
Other (Mac)

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
I prefer Ubuntu because it is more user friendly than Windows and there are probably 3 viruses in total as opposed to the 40 000 viruses each day for Windows. I had to reinstall Windows 10 TIMES because of the f**king viruses! Who ever inverted the Heur Virus is going to DIE!

Actually, did you know that there are literally no viruses for any UNIX system (Mac, Linux)? Not because they aren't used as much, but because the way the system is organized.
Windows and the old Mac OS (before OS X) got many viruses because the kernel allowed the system files to be edited.

Windows 7 is going retail on the 22nd ![]()
System files in OSX can be changed, administrator access needs to be given though, just like Vista and win7.

But not the core files, you can put things in the libraries that can edit applications, but not the OS itself.
And if the system files get edited and you don't want them, you just pop open disk utility and repair the system without needing to reformat your harddrive.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
There has been a repair system feature forever in windows, but ive never needed to use it. Pop in the install disk or boot into your recovery partion and its all good.
You can always edit a core system file on a UNIX based OS with superuser, im not sure how it would react if that particular file is in use though (When I had ubuntu installed I could pretty much edit any file whether it was in use or not), I know you cannot edit system files in windows if they are in use or running. Certain files are also protected by Windows Resource Protection.

Ubuntu was coded by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African dude.

You can't give all the credit to Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu is the works of thousands of developers.

Of course. Making an OS isn't a walk in the park. But Microsoft thinks that it is and look at their. Hideous!

I'll take Windows XP any day, but Linux is also very versatile so long as you know what the heck you're actually doing.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
Or get WINE and you can play Windows games on Linux and Ubuntu(which is technically Linux). There are new versions of Ubuntu out, Kubuntu and Zubuntu

I haven't gotten a chance to work with the Linux systems to a high degree as of yet, I don't take that class until next fall. Right now I'm just focused on working with XP/Vista/7 OS. The networking I do pertains to all of them anyways though so the more reason to learn up on all of them.

I'll experiment with a lot of things in given time. Right now my hands are full with Subnetting along so I have to focus on that.

Avast is a virus scan. Don't get AVG, Spybot, Norton and CERTAINLY not Macaffee

I use Kaspersky and that works just fine for me.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
Okay, that's good. We had the Heur virus 3 times and then we had worms and droppers and trojans ruin my day, cuz I have to reinstall BioShock again. It's a painful process. With avast we haven't got anymore problems now. Macaffee will find a virus and only tell you and destroy it 2 months later

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
McCaffe is one of the worst Anti-Virus softwares ever created. I ripped my dad the other day when he tried to use it on the new computer we have upstairs. Heck he wonders why the last one we had go so screwed up was due in large part to that freaking ridiculous excuse of an anti-virus system.

Yeah trust me you'll get a lot of love/hate/experience when it comes to talking about it on this forum. We have a good amount of computer intelligence lurking about here ![]()

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
Personally about six months or so. Before that I switched between a large variety of providers but right now Kas serves me well.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
Can it get rid of the Heur Virus? Cuz the last thing you want is the Heur Virus, it actually disables your firewall and virus scan. It takes over you PC completely, prevents you from starting up, it even deletes task manager!

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?
I've never used such a program, but you can manually delete the files for an anti-virus software, but even then some of them are so difficult to get out that it's better if you just have the entire drive wiped. Trying to get rid of McAfee was impossible because of several uninstall codes that were planted into the program.
