NetHack - a roguelike
Hey, does anyone play NetHack? It's a very challenging roguelike in which the goal is to ascend into a demigod. There's the ASCII variant and then there's the (more) graphical variant which I believe can be used by those with Windows. Sometimes you'll laugh, sometimes you'll cry, but you'll die a lot before you win for the first time (emphasis on the dying part, since your save is deleted unless you cheat by moving the save somewhere else, or enter explore mode.

Re: NetHack - a roguelike
Boring!
It's a rip-off of D&D... Like most dice RPGs...

NetHack borrows elements from many different things, and many games borrow elements from other things. In fact, D&D borrows elements from Lord of the Rings. Is it a Lord of the Rings ripoff?
Is it too hard for you?

Re: NetHack - a roguelike
perma-death? Do not want. There's always something that manages to kill me, especially in games like this.
Oh great, my lighthouse is on fire again, be right back...

If you don't want permadeath, press Ctrl-X. In my opinion, that makes it less fun, but whatever floats your boat.

Re: NetHack - a roguelike
I've got plenty of other unforgiving games to beat at the moment... maybe when I get through those.

Yes, elements are put in multiple games, but there is a big difference between real video games, and games like this. This is a rip-off of D&D just as much as snakes and ladders is a rip-off of shoots and ladders. Though Half-Life isn't considered a rip-off of Wolfenstein 3D, is it?
In fact, D&D borrows elements from Lord of the Rings. Is it a Lord of the Rings ripoff?
Like what? Fantasy? It was around way before LotR... And the board game was made way after D&D...
Is it too hard for you?
Now your just being pathetic. It's way too easy.

Re: NetHack - a roguelike
D&D borrows many concepts and terms from LotR. And as you said, fantasy isn't really anything new.
I bet you think it's too easy if you give up a few minutes into the game.

Re: NetHack - a roguelike
Your right, it is too easy if you play only a few minutes into the game...
Unfortunately that's where it counts, I played for only 30 minutes and stopped because it wasn't very hard.
