Re: What computer do YOU use?
Ive been reading a lot from Neotyguy40 about how you can build your own mac... well I hope you know its against apple's terms of service to install OSX on non-apple hardware
There is no warranty, it's just as if you hack your iPhone to work with other carriers, same thing.
Neotyguy40: You can't just "decompile" executable binary. It doesn't work that way, once its compiled theres no getting it back to source code state. You can dissassemble it in assembler, but thats hardly similar to C/++/any other language other than assembler.
It takes work, and you need to know what language it was created in, etc. Yet it is possible. There are a few things that decompilers don't do, they give random names to variables for instance.
Neotyguy40: "Clock speeds are almost 50% faster than Windows" If you had a processor 50% faster than the pc you were comparing to, then it would have a clock speed thats 50% faster. Clock speed reffers to the speed of the processor and changing the operating system doesn't magically make your processor faster.
Different operating systems do make the computer faster while using it. I am talking about if 2 computers have the same processor, RAM, etc. OS X can go almost 50% faster when using the same applications.
Neotyguy40: Your comparisons on different pc manufacturers are pretty much invalid. How can you have a computer thats good for gaming, but cant "process"? Doesn't make sense. As with all computer manufactuers, the more you pay the more you get. The Dell XPS machines are pretty cool, loaded with lots of goodies for less than $1500.
Process, as in math. I can't explain it all in one post, so I just suggest you look it up if you want to know about it.
Neotyguy40: "The reason is because OS X is limited on Mac computers, and since it comes from one company, everything works smoothly on it." Or because apple doesn't want companies to produce cheaper hardware so apple can continue its hardware monoply for its machines and suck people's wallets dry.
Whatever the reason you think it is, it still all comes from one person.
Neotyguy40: "they use the least amount of energy to perform and are much more recyclable then the plastic ones." So macs aren't made of plastic? LOL
Only one computer is made out plastic for Mac. And that type of computer is almost 4 years old now.
I don't understand why id want to run OSX... If I can do everything I do on windows on OSX, and vice versa, then why should I waste my time? Ill always program for windows, programming for osx is like making a car that can only drive on 5% of the roads.
It's because Mac is cross-platform. Everything that I make on Mac I can port to windows in less then half an hour.
Your opinion is your opinion alone, as I said before, I do NOT want to open a Mac vs. PC debate on this thread, if anyone wants to say anything bad about PCs or about Macs, then please make it on another thread. All I asked was what type of computers you all use, just because someone asked why people bag on Dell machines, doesn't mean that you all must open a Mac vs PC debate because I told him my honest opinion of why I think other PCs and Macs are more useful...

Re: What computer do YOU use?
No, when you install OSX onto non apple hardware, it is in breech of their EULA, and in breech of your agreement, it is illegal.
You CANNOT decompile compiled binary code back into the language it was created in. Its just not possible. You can decompile to assembly, but thats the lowest level next to binary you will get.
I don't know what your basing your 50% faster thing from...
Whatever you say, it doesn't matter, you said clock speed was 50% faster when that makes absolutly no sense because an operating system cannot magically change your processor speed.
No, apple hardware doesn't come from apple, its made by the same companies that make hardware for other desktop and laptop computers.
You were just saying how you can run anything from windows on mac... so why wouldn't I program directly on windows and screw the mac port?

An old one from when I was in *bleeping* 5th grade. It was the family
PC, and is now mine.
Gay desktop thing that is weak and can't stand up to any viruses.

Sir not appearing here wrote:I was just thinking about asking this!
I use a Dell Inpiron 1720 laptop with a 17'' screen with a 32 bit Vista operating system. The one odd thing about it is that it has a number pad like a desktop on it but it makes typing numbers soooooo much easier then the numbers on the top.
Nice, I was looking at that when I was shopping for computers. I was really diggin' on the studio 15, mostly because of the slick fingerprint reader it has. But they didn't have it, so I went with this 1525 instead.
I don't get why so many people rag on Dell computers. They're very good, reliable, and inexpensive machines.
Well I don't know much about computers but I think Dell is a great brand.

It's called a Hacintosh

I was able to do it.

Ok, when I say clock speed, I mean how fast the computer runs.
No, apple hardware doesn't come from apple, its made by the same companies that make hardware for other desktop and laptop computers.
That... Makes no sense... Apple hardware comes from Apple, hence the word Apple hardware... The shell, the screen, and everything that is considered Apple hardware is made by Apple. Not the GPU or CPU, that isn't Apple hardware.
You were just saying how you can run anything from windows on mac... so why wouldn't I program directly on windows and screw the mac port?
Because it requires work on the users part. I could care less what you program your stuff on.
Now again, can we please just drop this and stay on-topic?

I'm not talking about all computers... Just the top 1 or 2 you use the most.
If I counted all the computers I have, it would be almost 20... Although 5 of them are really old...

Cause. Buying retail is about $1000 extra depending on what you get.
And believe me when you find out how ridiculously easy it is to build a computer you will be kicking yourself xD.

Re: What computer do YOU use?
Here is a scenario. There are 2 people that have no computers. Or anything to do with computers. One of them goes with Alienware, one with Mac:
Now let's see the specs for the cheapest Alienware computer on their site:
AMD Athlon 2.7GHz Dual Core 2
512MB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
250GB SATA 7200RPMNow let's check the cheapest iMac:
2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
320GB Serial ATA Drive
2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
NVIDIA GeForce 9400MiMac has a better HDD, better RAM, and slightly better Processor.
Alienware has a better GPU, but only by about 8% more power. Now we need to buy the other things for Alienware:
Cheapest monitor: $299
Cheapest keyboard: $85
Cheapest mouse: $65The iMac on the other hand comes with all of that. So let's check the prices now:
iMac: $1,199
Alienware: $1,248Well what do you know? That's that! $50 more for less power. Not to mention that the Mac is greener, takes less space, and you can install Windows onto it as well as Mac.
I'll do a laptop comparison later when I have more time.
Things always seam to be more expecive online though.... I don't have a side on this but... just pointing this out....
If tomorrow may never come, and yesterday is just a memory, then what is today worth?
