What computer do YOU use?

I would like to know what computers everyone here uses. I know there is a thread like this, but every time I post a new thread, people say "There's already a thread like this!" and whenever I post on that thread they say "Don't bring back old threads!".

Please include:

Type of Computer (Laptop, Brand, Type, etc.)
Operating System (Also include type: Ubuntu, Leopard, Vista Home, etc.)
Processor
Memory (Include type: DDR3, EDO, etc.)
Graphics Card
Drive (HDD, SSD, Flash, etc.)

Here are my computers:

iMac Late 2006 Model
Mac OS X 10.6.7, and Windows XP Home
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
256 HDD

13" MacBook Pro Mid 2009 Model
Mac OS X 10.6.7
2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
256 SSD

I just wanted to know how much power people have in their computer's nowadays.

Re: What computer do YOU use?

I was just thinking about asking this! smile  I use a Dell Inpiron 1720 laptop with a 17'' screen with a 32 bit Vista operating system. The one odd thing about it is that it has a number pad like a desktop on it but it makes typing numbers soooooo much easier then the numbers on the top.

Nice, I was looking at that when I was shopping for computers.  I was really diggin' on the studio 15, mostly because of the slick fingerprint reader it has.  But they didn't have it, so I went with this 1525 instead.

I don't get why so many people rag on Dell computers.  They're very good, reliable, and inexpensive machines.

It's because they don't really have a place in the computer market:

Alienware - Good for fast gaming, but bad for processing
HP/Gateway - Good for processing, but not graphics
Mac - Both gaming and processing (depends on which one)
Dell - Low end of gaming and processing.

The thing is, Dell's focus is on trying to keep their computers the cheapest out there. It's just when you want to make something cheap, they need to take the power out of both the GPU and CPU.

They should really spread their market out more, like trying to make high-performance machines. I believe this is what they are trying to do though.

That is why I use Mac. People say their are no games for mac, but I am able to play all my Steam games, Spore, WoW, etc. And I need to use my Mac for processing, since I design games. It's not a matter of which computer I think is better, it's which computer I NEED for my stuff. And I don't know why people always say that Mac is bad, or Windows is bad. It's all a matter of taste and what you use the computer for.

You realize Dell makes Alienware computers?  And the great thing about Dells is you can customize them and change whatever you want in them (this goes for about every computer out there really, save for Macs which are incredibly limited as far as customization goes).  They also have the XPS series which is a set of powerful machines for a relatively low cost.

Macs are a waste of money: plain and simple.  Anything you can get in a Mac you can get in a Dell for far, far cheaper.  Or any computer ever, really.  Hell, you could build a computer from scratch and end up with one better than a Mac in every way for less.  I don't know why anyone would want to *bleep* away their money on something just because it has a pretty GUI.

Umm... What? You can customize Mac computers online for better graphics, processors, RAM, etc.

I am talking about brand, not company itself. Alienware is a completely separate section in the company.

Macs aren't a waste of cash, because any PC with the same specs as a Mac run much slower. That is the beauty of OS X, it is powerful on the inside AND the outside. The reason is because OS X is limited on Mac computers, and since it comes from one company, everything works smoothly on it. Apple builds OS X around the computer, while PCs must build the computer around Windows.

And it is possible to build a Mac computer now that they support Intel chips. The reason I would want to, as you say, *Bleep* my money away is because some people want high performance machines. Macs are known to be able to run extremely high performance applications better then Alienware or Dell.

Macs are the most eco-friendly computer in the world too, they use the least amount of energy to perform and are much more recyclable then the plastic ones. They are lighter and smaller then other computers with their power too (other then the Mac Pro), so that is another reason why they are higher priced. Apple can easily make a computer like the others, but why would they? They are getting much higher sales now, and the pretty GUI has nothing to do with it...

You can customize Macs based on what they offer to you, but it doesn't change the fact that Macs are probably the least customizable computers out there, because Apple makes everything.  That's the beauty of an open-source OS like Windows, anyone can make anything for it, so you can make a good computer even better, and extremely cheaply, because whatever you're buying doesn't have to be made for just one type of computer.

A PC and a Mac with the same specs will.... run the same.  If you have the same specs the only thing that will change how things work is how the OS handles applications, and a PC can handle that much more efficiently than a Mac can.  And if you were to get two computers, the same exact specs and size monitor, I guarantee that the Mac will be far, far more expensive.  Hell, Apple is probably the only company with the sheer gaud to have a $3000 laptop with no CD drive, 1 USB port, and a whole bunch of other "up-yours", that people are actually still stupid enough to buy.

Complete fabrication...

Just because you can't customize what type of 'body' it has like you can do Alienware, does not mean it isn't customizable. You are able to change everything that matters. Processor, GPU, RAM, etc.

Windows is NOT open-source. Open-source means that you can change the internal code without decompiling. Almost nothing on Windows is open-source. The only OS out there that is open-source is Linux.

Whatever you can make for Mac, you can make for Windows. You just need to compile it to fit into an exe.

I have no idea what your talking about when you say a $3000 computer with no disk drive or what you call an "up-yours". Only the Macbook Air doesn't have a disk drive, and it is only $1,499 or $1,799. Not $3000.

Mac has been proven to run faster than Windows, look it up. Clock speeds are almost 50% faster than Windows. Start-up time, coming out of sleep mode, loading web pages, starting applications. All of them are faster on the Mac than PC.

Here is a scenario. There are 2 people that have no computers. Or anything to do with computers. One of them goes with Alienware, one with Mac:

Now let's see the specs for the cheapest Alienware computer on their site:

AMD Athlon 2.7GHz Dual Core 2
512MB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
250GB SATA 7200RPM

Now let's check the cheapest iMac:

2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
320GB Serial ATA Drive
2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

iMac has a better HDD, better RAM, and slightly better Processor.
Alienware has a better GPU, but only by about 8% more power.

Now we need to buy the other things for Alienware:

Cheapest monitor: $299
Cheapest keyboard: $85
Cheapest mouse: $65

The iMac on the other hand comes with all of that. So let's check the prices now:

iMac: $1,199
Alienware: $1,248

Well what do you know? That's that! $50 more for less power. Not to mention that the Mac is greener, takes less space, and you can install Windows onto it as well as Mac.

I'll do a laptop comparison later when I have more time.

Let me save you the trouble.

My Inspiron is 15.4 inches, 2 GHz intel core 2 duo processor, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB hard drive, and it cost me less than $600 brand new.

A Macbook, 13 inch, 160 GB hard drive, 2 gigs of RAM, 2.13 GHz processor.  $1000 new.

So my Dell that cost almost half as much as a Macbook outclasses it in every way save for the processor, and I really don't think that makes enough of a difference to validate $400+ more in price.

Which brings me to a very important part about buying something that's not a Mac: deals.  You can get all sorts of deals if you buy something not made by Apple.  That alienware you mentioned?  If you look around the site or online, you can probably find it for half of that price, bundled with everything you want in it.  A Mac, however, is always over $1,000.  It's a glorious thing, having companies be able to make their own machines that the OS is then just applied to.  It lets the company decide what kind of sales they want to have and what kind of deals they're willing to give you.  Hell, admittedly this laptop was probably a couple hundred dollars more at sticker price, but through the wonders of business, I paid less than $600!

That explains it. You think the only way to get a Mac is from Apple directly.

Their are alot of places that you can get new macs for the same prices as other computers. Cheaper retailers are available for Mac.

And you forgot that the Macbook has a much more powerful GPU then a Dell notebook. And it uses DDR3 RAM rather than DDR2. And size does not matter. It's just preference. I prefer laptops that are light enough and small enough to be portable.

Re: What computer do YOU use?

Seeing as I only have my Macbook on me at the moment, that's all I can do in terms of info.

Model Name:            MacBook (13" 2008 model)
Model Identifier:     MacBook5,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:    2.4 GHz
L2 Cache:                    3 MB
Memory:                    2 GB
Bus Speed:            1.07 GHz

They also gave me a free iPod Classic (80 GB) and HP Printer with Wi-Fi. And a $200 mail in rebate. Woo! ^.^

I have two wireless internet devices: a NETGEAR-N as primary and linksys in case of an emergency.

I applaud Apple on their brilliant marketing strategy with their electronics. They periodically release new generations with slight modifications rather than waiting a longer period of time and release a generation with significant updates. *applauds*

Seeing as I only have my Macbook on me at the moment, that's all I can do in terms of info.

Model Name:            MacBook (13" 2008 model)
Model Identifier:     MacBook5,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:    2.4 GHz
L2 Cache:                    3 MB
Memory:                    2 GB
Bus Speed:            1.07 GHz

They also gave me a free iPod Classic (80 GB) and HP Printer with Wi-Fi. And a $200 mail in rebate. Woo! ^.^

I have two wireless internet devices: a NETGEAR-N as primary and linksys in case of an emergency.

I applaud Apple on their brilliant marketing strategy with their electronics. They periodically release new generations with slight modifications rather than waiting a longer period of time and release a generation with significant updates. *applauds*

I just wish they wouldn't segregate themselves so much from the competition. OS X only works on Mac (unless you build it yourself), the new iTunes keeps all non-Apple products from working with it (Palm Pre, Zune, etc.).

But anyway, Atresac, I don't care that you don't like Apple, is this the computer you have? The middle one?

Re: What computer do YOU use?

Ive been reading a lot from Neotyguy40 about how you can build your own mac... well I hope you know its against apple's terms of service to install OSX on non-apple hardware tongue

Oh wait... apple doesn't use any special hardware. Its the same hardware all other laptops and desktops use, except its packed up into a nice little shell.

Atresac: Windows is not open source.

Neotyguy40: You can't just "decompile" executable binary. It doesn't work that way, once its compiled theres no getting it back to source code state. You can dissassemble it in assembler, but thats hardly similar to C/++/any other language other than assembler.

Neotyguy40: "Clock speeds are almost 50% faster than Windows" If you had a processor 50% faster than the pc you were comparing to, then it would have a clock speed thats 50% faster. Clock speed reffers to the speed of the processor and changing the operating system doesn't magically make your processor faster.

Neotyguy40: Your comparisons on different pc manufacturers are pretty much invalid. How can you have a computer thats good for gaming, but cant "process"? Doesn't make sense. As with all computer manufactuers, the more you pay the more you get. The Dell XPS machines are pretty cool, loaded with lots of goodies for less than $1500.

Neotyguy40: "The reason is because OS X is limited on Mac computers, and since it comes from one company, everything works smoothly on it." Or because apple doesn't want companies to produce cheaper hardware so apple can continue its hardware monoply for its machines and suck people's wallets dry.

Neotyguy40: "they use the least amount of energy to perform and are much more recyclable then the plastic ones." So macs aren't made of plastic? LOL

I don't understand why id want to run OSX... If I can do everything I do on windows on OSX, and vice versa, then why should I waste my time? Ill always program for windows, programming for osx is like making a car that can only drive on 5% of the roads.
