Cliche?

Well guys... Anybody have a list of them? lol... I know people use the word a lot but at school I hear it misused often... so here's the definition... at least as I have understood:

A saying that is over used so much that it's meaning is gone.

I figured that I'd try to make a list here so I'm asking all of you guys to help make a list... here's a few I thought of:

-Love overcomes (Actually just love in general mostly)
-After life (No matter how fake or real it is... NO ARGUMENTS PLEASE)

Not much else I can think of, but I'm not around many girly girls so I guess that's why I can' think of many more...

Any other people can think of?

Re: Cliche?

Here's one that all twilight-haters hate:

"and so the lion fell in love with the lamb".

cliche storyline for romance stuff:
Girl meets guy, guy and girl have friendship and begin to love eachother within 3 days. Father doesn't want girl/guy seeing guy/girl. Run away. Some ex tries to take the girl back from the guy. Fistfight. Guy isn't strong enough as ex and loses hope of girl ever wanting guy. Guy runs away with girl. Parents find girl and guy and let them be together. The end.

Re: Cliche?

There you go... lol... yeah... i hate Romances because of the old story line... about the same as a horse movie...

But anyhow Fantacy is about the same way but you never know how it's going to end because all of them end differently... Romance is never a tradgety... mabey i could fix that... Nah... I'd puke to write it

Re: Cliche?

"No! It can't it broke it's leg, I'm taking it away from you!"

(Two months later)
"Bob the horse comes back from loosing all 4 legs and wins the race for nothing... YES!"

yeah... they are always the same way

Re: Cliche?

OH GAWD! Cliches are my BANE as a writer >////< They are incredibly hard to avoid and are some of the worst things around to have in a story. The most cliched things around though, are relationships. NO MATTER WHAT you will have at LEAST one cliched line appear in any love based relationship. PERIOD. ESPECIALLY in breakups. "It's not you, it's me." "We should see other people." These are some of the more common, as well as the predecessor: "We need to talk..."

I don't want to go into my ENTIRE rant about cliches, but lets just say that I have a vendetta against them.

That is all.....for now

And Shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord for thee.
Power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command.
So we shall flow river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In nomine patris, et filli, et spiritus sancti.

Re: Cliche?

Just like there's the whole cliché in fantasy stories with knights and dragons; knight is a crusader, dragon is a symbol of evil, terrorizing villages and such. Knight is asked to slay dragon, epic battle between them, knight slays dragon and is revered as a hero.

In my original story, things are different. Vastly different. So much so, who is truly good and who is truly evil is ambiguous, until the very end.

Re: Cliche?

Yeah.. Cliche's appear all over the place... It's impossable to avoid them... I just try to use the ones that are least used.. lol...

Good ones are fine but it gets annoying once you see the same one 50 thousand times.

Ex: any Horse movie as mentioned earlyer

Re: Cliche?

Cliches are unavoidable, there's a reason they're used so often and that's because they basically depict what you want depicted. Personally I don't try to avoid them, I just add a little twist in every now and then or try to hide them with sub plots.

I agree. Almost every romantic comedy I watch has pretty much the same thing going round:

1. Girl meets nice, handsome guy.
2. They become friends.
3. They begin to like each other.
4. She does something stupid.
5. He throws a fit.
6. She does something not stupid.
7. He forgives her.
8. They kiss.

The end.

Ugh... find some better ideas please moviemakers...

Re: Cliche?

It's the movie writers fault that that happens... I like house but here's the series of events for that show (EVERY TIME)

1. Person has something go wrong
2. Go over the patient
3. Do something to them
4. Doesn't work
5. Does something crazy and makes the patient worse
6. House's boss yells at him
7. Something wierd and stupid happens to House
8. It shows him what's wrong
9. Patient barely survives (except on of the episodes the patient dies... Yay something different!.. lol)

But almost every show is a cliche anymore now if you think of it... Can anybody think of one that isn't?
