Reputation system

Hey! I'm a pretty new member here, but that doesn't stop me from giving suggestions wink

I've seen this on other forums before, that use something related to a reputation system. Whenever someone does something good, like help someone resolve an issue. They receive a green rep point and red for doing something VERY bad.

To prevent rep spamming, you could make it how once you rep another member, you have to rep 5 other members to rep that person again and you can only rep a certain amount in a certain period of time.

What do you guys think?

Re: Reputation system

Well they did use to have a ranking system here...what you are saying is a little different I see...but I'm not quite sure if they are into the idea of having some members gaining an edge over another in terms of reputation or something of that sorts...at least that's what I have garnered through actions on here...everyone would be rushing to try to gain more reputation over others and such...and that would lead to a mess.....but that's just what I think would happen...

I'm sure one of the moderators will get back to you on the idea...

Thank you for the reply. If we teach our members how to use this properly though, it could lead to an exciting, new feature to the forums. As we all know, it's not a perfect idea, but nothing is! If my idea isn't approved then that's just too bad, I'm just sharing my opinions/ideas.

But as I said in my OP. We will give reputation to someone who has given something of great value to the community and people can only give reputation if they've been a member for a certain amount of time and/or has a certain amount of gems.

Thanks for the reply though big_smile

Re: Reputation system

And I definetly see where you want to go with it man I do....I like the idea itself as well....but with the amount of members that do belong to this site...a vast majority never even post..they just read the forums or do nothing at all...but again I'm not a moderator so I'm not gonna speak for them.

All I know is that they tried ranking in the past and they didn't like it for several reasons. They will give you the credit for voicing your idea though...that's always welcomed. I just think it's too similar to the ranking that they lost appreciation in a long time ago.

I haven't been a member for long, so I don't know much about the old system and what the community is like. The community is pretty inactive, getting a few posts here and there, and you're right. Everything is going to have problems, thanks for looking at my idea though and the reply.

Re: Reputation system

Well it depends on the kind of day. I keep all the topic I am involved in subrscribed on my gmail...that way I know whenever their are responses...and on average I have at least 25-30 a day...so they are out there....just never on really at the same time. Anyways the old system was just the usual...post and post and post....the more posts you get...the higher your rank. Or at least that's what I heard....

But members just kept doing stupid random posts that have no relevence to Spyro or any topic just to get a higher rank....so they ended up abandoning that and just keeping things tight like it is now. That's just the way they want to do things. I'm surprised none of them have made a comment on this yet lol....but they have reasons.

It looks like a related system. This system is based on the overall quality of the posts, not the quantity.

Re: Reputation system

And I'm not saying anything against that man...I like it...but I feel that the moderators and SR will still see that as an opportunity for others to just try and get ahead and consider themselves the more deserving Spyro fan...that's just the feeling I get.

Re: Reputation system

RedDragonX has the right idea about my feelings on this, sorry. It doesn't seem like something that would work well here: I can just imagine people whining because someone gave them a low rating, or giving people low ratings for personal reasons. Oh, and let's not forget the people who would claim to be "better" than the people with lower ratings than themselves.

If the main audience of this forum was a little older, it might work out, but as of now we simply have too many young kids who don't really understand the point of forums for this to actually work.

Like RedDragonX said, we had ranks based on post counts, which naturally led to immature people spamming to get their post counts up and become a "Spyro Senior". Anything that puts one member higher than another, even moderator positions sometimes, tend to lead to arguments and jealousy.

And yeah, sorry I haven't replied to this until now.... I've been, er, busy. tongue

Re: Reputation system

With a bunch of 8-11 year olds here, the reputation system, like Red and
Aicebo said, will go haywire. Xbox Live uses a reputation system, and isn't
very effective, because pretty much everybody has a five-star rating. They
get their buddies to prefer them so that their rep will go up. Also, certain
people are too lazy to use the reputation system anyways.

I believe that we have finalized that a rep system just won't work for this
website. In a way, it has been attempted before, and failed.

Re: Reputation system

That was "Stormy" not Aicebo lol...but yeah...anything that involves reputation will be taken advantage of in anyway that people can do so...and they don't want anything here that divides members apart besides the rank of Moderators and the single Administrator.

Re: Reputation system

You guys are right, it wouldn't work out right with the young ones running around.

Anyone else have a different view/opinion on this?

Re: Reputation system

How about only the mods could give a rating or maybe people over a certain age or something maybe?

Re: Reputation system

All these Ideas are good and all, but the coding is the hardest part. But anyway, If we think a member does something nice to us we can always give them gems, and if they do bad, report to spyrorocks and he will ban/take gems away.

Re: Reputation system

Well that's pretty much as far as they will go with it. SR has bigger things to worry about then trying to figure out some kind of ranking system and such. They tried it and it didn't work...so this is how they want it for now.

If only the mods could do it, no one would have any reputation because there just aren't that many mods, and might be obvious which mod rated which member. If only people over a certain age could do it, the younger members would whine about how it's not fair, and maturity can't always be measured by age anyway.

Basically, there's not really a use for this, so I see no reason to try to think of ways to try to make it work. All I can see it doing is causing drama and prejudices due to people looking at reputation ratings to decide whether they should talk to someone or not.

You have the right idea about this, though I'm not really sure about the coding thing. =/

Re: Reputation system

You guys can prolly just lock the topic. Unless of course someone else has something to say about it.

Okay, but I find it a little annoying when members tell me to lock threads that they didn't start.... tongue
