debate forum

Seeing how there are a lot of threads (mainly in the general discussion forum) now that are filled with debate topics, would it be possible to make all future threads in a separate debate forum? Many threads end up as often long-winded debates with logical arguments, and eventually they become more than just simple discussion topics. As it stands, I think there are enough mature people here to merit the creation of a debate forum without causing much of a problem. Thoughts?

Re: debate forum

I like the idea. I'm not sure if it will stop the debating in General Chat completely, but it would probably at least decrease the amount of it.

Re: debate forum

I don't know if the aim is to stop the debating....

While I do like the idea, as I'm kind of a debater myself, I don't know if it's needed. Maybe there could be a special debate forum? I don't know if SR still has this rule, but there used to be an option where anyone could propose an idea for a special group, and SR would review it to see if it was a good idea. If it was approved, the creator would moderate the group. I had considered making a DDR one once but thought it might not fit with the Spyro theme of this forum too well. =P

Re: debate forum

its not a bad idea, the only problem is every topic can be (and for that matter) should be debated

whats your fave band
i like this
what! i hate that
why
because
i guess
etc.

if a debate topic is gonna be made, i would suggest maybe it be the only place used to discuss contraversial issues

politics
religion
etc. (cuz really politics covers a huge chunk of it)

Re: debate forum

@Fletch: the several examples you've listed in the first part of your post are NOT debatable threads that can support meaningful claims on an issue; the latter things you've listed are. In other words, one of the rules of a debate forum is that all threads must be presented in a way that creates substantial discussion obviously.  If a thread is deemed unsuitable for the debate forum, lock it or better yet move the thread to the general discussion.

I think one of the more important rule for a debate forum is to prohibit making claims that cannot be falsified. This rules out several things that would be more prevalent in a general discussion such as:
- Using faith as evidence on namely religious topics. e.g."I believe in this because God said so/it's from the Bible."
- Opinionated topics that doesn't promote debate. e.g. Fletch's example: "What's your favorite band?" (no actual facts)

I'm making this suggestion of a debate forum not for cleaning up arguments on the general discussion forum. I just think that there's quite a difference between actual debate threads and regular chit-chat threads that a separate forum would be wonderful.

Re: debate forum

I know that I am the perfect person to argue with because my point of veiw is contraversal. Why cant we all just get along?

I made a thread for us christians to discuss our weiws but it got closed because the non-believers wanted to argue. I did not want to turn them away so i asked some general questions but even that made an arguement. If some one can seperate the arguements from the discussions that would indeed be a brake thruogh. We still will need the administraters help on this. Lets just see if he is up for the chalenge.

Fell in love with Spyro when I was little. I played it with my friends. They went different ways over time and I refused to let this go. I am seventeen and still enjoy playing the old games as well as the new. Game makers are of their own and I have no reason to disagree because they made it perfect

It was just one thread. If it means that much to you than maybe you can talk with other Christians in PM. I do hope you know that this is not a religion forum and people aren't all going to always go along with things like that if that's what they're not here to discuss.

I was not only refferring to the rligouse one. Neither am i mad about it bing closed. I dont want to bring up any past discussions for that would only turn into another debate.

You do have a good point however. The religouse forums that i have been on were either more than pg 13 or they did not alow newbies to post at all. You would have to post a lot before they would allow you to post something for everyone to see. Please dont think differently of me because it is easeir to have a spot for religion on the forum.

I think SR does a real good job keeping this forum clean. Atleast if you compare it to some of the other forums i have been on.

The only problem you have is keeping everyone happy. That also explians why you have so many debates. Look at the bright side atleast you have not been brought up to the media's atention. Look at what happend to myspace.

Let them have a seperate spot on this forum to debate. I would help moderate it but that is up to you.

Persionally i think being moderator is a little difficult. The only reason people would respect you is to gain your trust. However if there is no other persion that would step up to the plate i will commit to it and will not put any one down just for their point of veiw. If you have anyone else who thinks they can do it let them have the honor.

Re: debate forum

No debate forum. General chat and the spam section are enough non-spyro talk sections.
