They're not really drilled into your teeth (at least, mine weren't), they're more like glued on. The paste smells pretty bad, so if you can smell with your mouth as well as your nose, try not to inhale too much. The fun thing is after you're finished getting the braces in you get to choose what color elastics you want. ^.^

Everybody says they hurt. They don't hurt to me. The only time they hurt was when I first got them and a dew weeks after they would cut the inside of the mouth. But after awhile I just got used to it and even when they're tightened they don't hurt. I've had them for a year and a half now and I don't even notice they're there most of the time.

And no Cyberchick they don't drill into your teeth as meepster has stated, it's a glue-like cement that holds the brackets onto your teeth. The process of getting braces shouldn't hurt at all. But before they put your braces on they give you spacers (at least they did to me) which are simply rubbers bands put between your back teeth so that the anchors can be placed on your tooth. Now those DID hurt for me. I couldn't eat anything solid for two weeks. I don't know if every Orthodontist does this though.

It's not really that bad. You get used to braces really fast. The pain once you get them lasts for about 2 or 3 days. The only time they might hurt a bit is when you get them tightened, and that wears off in a few days too.

i have to get a retainer and 4 braces at the same time. then they addin onta them ina year.

Well, you get them tightened about every 6 weeks. (At least at my Orthodontist) And how long you have them on all depends on how bad your teeth are. I had mine for a year and a half. I'm not really sure what is the typical amount of time people have them though.

During the period of time they do sort of bother, tomato and chicken soup is highly recommended~

Yeah, the first week was pretty bad. I had a lot of soup and apple sauce.

What does gum do to braces? Does it dislodge them, or does the gum get stuck in them or something?

The gum just might stick to them. That happens sometimes, but it's easy enough to un-stick. They probably think it might ruin something by dislodging it. Can't be too careful I guess. :\

Fair enough. Sounds like a rule imposed by paranoid dentists, though like you said, can't be too careful. Is it troublesome to brush your teeth wearing braces (i.e. do they get in the way of the toothbrush?)

I guess I forgot to answer the topic title btw, I don't have braces (if you haven't guessed already lol).
