This is really starting to annoy me.
[sub]There needs to be some stricter consequences for art theft. I'm seeing it everywhere, and punishment for it is almost nonexistent.
Here's an example: http://www.spyroforum.com/topic-6331-we … highlight=
The picture of Cynder in Sparx96's signature was first drawn by SFRB. As you can see, no credit is given. Not only that, someone had already made a banner out of it and put Spyro_For_Life's name on it, so it's been double stolen.
That is just one example, but I can dig up more if needed.
This is getting ridiculous. It should be common courtesy, not to mention common sense, that someone worked hard on that image, and that it's extremely rude to steal it without so much as a "thank you, SFRB." I believe people who steal other people's art should at least be banned for a few days and not just let off with a warning.

I agree with this. Art theft should be cracked down upon.

I reported this: http://www.spyroforum.com/post-180701.html#180701 She obviously did not draw that seeing the date of copyright, and she claimed it as her own.

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
[sub]I think we've found another one. -_-
xXxSpyro__CynderxXx stole a banner from Artiste_violet's DeviantART account. It even says in the title if you click in the image "by artiste_violet," but no credit is given in the signature.
Personally, if I was a mod, I'd remove these people's privileges to have signatures. -__-[/sub]

SFRB? I'm a friend of her's.
Yeah, I'm guilty of being a little "evil", but art theft is just plain wrong. D:

I agree. What if someone stole your work and gave you no credit? I'd hate it!

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
I'm removing banners and pictures from people's signatures if you don't give credit or stole it. If you don't credit the real artist next to/below/above the picture, it's art theft.
Everyone knows I only eat Cynder fangirls.

What if they were gifts and you knew they would be cool with it?

[sub]They would have said so on the artist's description on the DA page.[/sub]

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
I agree wholeheartedly Stormy. Art theft also doesn't just pertain specifically to pictures, but also to literature, as literature's a form of artwork, whether it be short stories, novels, poems, etc. I like to draw in my spare time, and also to write, and I'd be furious if my artwork was stolen, so I have the common sense not to do the same. That's what art thieves don't seem to understand, the original artist worked hard on their pieces, and then they go and steal all of that hard work, taking credit for it and not giving credit where credit is due.

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
I really hate art theft, if someone stole something of mine...god they better run and hide! Some people know how quick my temper is on here...heh, well...you've just scraped the tip of the iceburg. And a main reason I'd get mad is that I'm VERY sensitive and touchy when it comes to my art, one wrong word and I can pop...same goes for my appearance, but times the art one by 10.

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
It's not theft unless they claim credit for it. If I had the mona lisa in my signature I'm not going to put a disclaimer saying "credit goes to Leonardo DaVinci".

Like right here. The original poster never said "I made this". They didn't put their name on it. They didn't claim credit in any way shape or form. They are not making money from it. They have copy and pasted the URL of an image they found on the internet onto their signature on a non-profit site. That's not theft, that's the internet.

also if the artwork itself has the artists name on it then they havnt stolen it (unless theyre stupid enough to leave someone elses name on it)
if there was a name on it and theyve erased/covered it, then thats theft, unless they have artists permission

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
Yes, i think that Art theft is bad. But i also think that if someone just has an artwork in their signature and isnt claiming it as there own, then it isnt art theft.

Just take your signature for example, you didn't paint that, but someone out there painted it or did whatever they did to make that picture. You don't need to give them credit.
People on deviantArt don't get special treatment.

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
[sub]I am friends with SFRB on DeviantART, though, and she got pretty upset when people stole her art. People on DeviantART don't draw so random people can put use their art without permission; it's the same as claiming it to be theirs if they use it without giving credit.
The difference with Spyromaster330's banner is that everyone knows he/she didn't draw that; it's the game box art, isn't it? So even if he/she did claim it, everyone would know it was a lie. It's like my avatar, obviously a picture from the game creators that pretty much everyone has seen before. With the instances we pointed out, someone took the time and effort to put together that picture of Cynder and the banner so people could view and enjoy it, and know that they themselves created it.
Edit: OK, if you're still not convinced, you might want to read this.
Hm, I wonder if that means it's copyright infringement to use that game box art stuff after all. .__. Spyrorocks will know; he has pictures from instructions manuals and stuff like that all over Spyroforum. [/sub]

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
There a little thing called "fair use".
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections and , the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

[sub]I saw that as well, but the avatars and stuff aren't being used for "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research."
Meh, I'm sure they probably don't care.[/sub]

Re: This is really starting to annoy me.
It all falls under fair use, as long as you are not taking credit for said work and are not posting it when it clearly states "Do not redistribute" on said works.
