Have any of you made lasers by hand? Have you had any experience with them? Tell us what you know here!

The only lasers I had is the dollar-store variety.

And the lasers I worked with are CD and DVD drive lasers from reworking a PS1 and a PS2. I'm trying to get hold of a PS3 that does not read discs so I can rework the Blu-Ray drive.

You said it takes 5mW to make 532nm.

Clarify: 5mW of what wavelength and how much 532nm are you talking about?

520-565 nm = green light.

Mine being 532 nanometers, puts it in that category. As far as I know, my laser uses all of its power. I mainly use my lasers for Astrology so I'm not as familiar with the terms.

Okay, you've really lost me now. I'm not good with terms. I will upload my video and you can see the laser for yourself. Forgive me if it sounds like I'm not making sense but my father has open-heart surgery in a few hours and I'm nervous.

Yeah, well, if your putting something as complex and hard to align as a green laser, I assume you know a few basic terms.

You can easily make a blu-ray laser. Its not true blue (Its actually violet), but it looks blue when you shine it at white things.

True blue is much more expensive to product (Due to supply and demand) and, as with any DPSS lasers, VERY hard if not impossible for hobbyist to actually align all the optics and crystals.

I was just doing a timetunnel effect in my bathroom with my fogger. Ill get a picture. Its super awesome to actually see IRL, though.

Blu-ray lasers actually don't require a ton of knowledge to make. You just have to know how it basically works and know where the parts go. The laser is already made for you within the diode.

Its called a "direct inject" diode. Manufactuers design direct inject diodes for products that are mass produced, such as red lasers for dvd burners/players, 780nm diodes for cd burners/players, and 405nm (violet) diodes for bluray.

All you need to do is supply power to the diode (If its bluray), but you will need to collaminate it as well. I suggest using an Aixiz laser module for collamination, along with a decent current regulator board (I don't recommend using a resistor for regulation).

It retails for around ~$400 (Prices might have been changed).

@Bmah: I was fascinated by the fact that hand held lasers had the power to burn, but once I started to learn more about them, the burning aspect didn't mean much anymore, just the science and technology behind them and how they work fascinated me, and still does today. Plus, I love those colours smile
