Re: Bad Hobbies

If any of you ever want to get a green high powered laser, DO NOT buy from www.wickedlasers.com. They will scam you.

I will. In fact, when I get the time, (Either tommorow or this weekend) I'll try to put up a working demostration with my laser. I ripped up a broken PS3 and took out the diode.

Have you ever seen the old star trek phasers? I'm trying to rig up mine to work like that. Technically the laser is violet but it looks blue to me. I just got a webcam and am trying to work with it so it can produce in HD.

Re: Bad Hobbies

Its 405nm, which is technically violet.

Because of florescence on white objects, it will appear to be blue (473nm).

405nm is a strange colour, it will do funny things to your eyes.

Did you use a driverboard when you built it, or just rigged it up to some batteries?

Re: Bad Hobbies

I generally avoid working with lasers unless I really need to.

And I handle the lasers with the power off.

Re: Bad Hobbies

It blows my mind Spyrorocks that you would approach anything like that at 14 years old. At that age, I was just satisfied with Laser Tag!  :S

What do your parents think of all this?

Re: Bad Hobbies

Haha, well mostly they think it is a waste of money (My first green laser was a 95mw CNI green, which cost $200), But I don't see the problem on spending money on something that you like.

Re: Bad Hobbies

Oh, don't worry. My main hobby of mineral collecting is VERY expensive as well. A lot of hobbies are, because often you are seeking something either expensive, rare, beautiful/aesthetic, high-quality, etc.

Re: Bad Hobbies

SR, sorry for not responding earlier, my dad's having surgery and I had to ride down to central VA.

For the Blu-ray laser, I simply removed the diode and welded it together with a laser container, (A round tube) Then I rigged up a battery to it and made a trigger myself.

Right now, I'm working on a laser that uses a driverboard and can project a green laser to 2 miles away. I should have it completed sometime next week. My mom works at a hospital and she sometimes brings home old computers and other machines which I can find parts in.

As soon as it's finished, I'll put up a video and upload it here. When I finish my modifications to the blu-ray pointer I should be able to put it up as well.

Re: Bad Hobbies

NEVER hook a laser diode directly up to a battery without any sort of current regulator. You will severely shorten its life and quite possibly kill it with a voltage spike.

Laser container? Do you mean housing?

What size of crystals are you using for your 2 mile green? What size of pump diode? How much output are you shooting for?

2 miles isn't that far for a properly collaminiated green or red laser.

It does have a current regulator. Although the one I'm making is a prototype.

Yes, I got it specially made to fit the diode.

2 miles is an estimate based on my math. I could have made a mistake. I'll double check. I expect a little over 550nm. I'll have to check on my crystal size, I have it written down.

What size of pump diode are you going to use?

Huh? All I see is a bunch of random characters!

EDIT: Okay, I see it.

Before playing with lasers, please put the googles on, 'mkay?

Re: Bad Hobbies

310mw (peak), I believe. I will double check on that but I'm pretty sure that is correct. It usually gets down to 205mw after it settles down.

Doppel: I've been working around lasers since I was ten. I have all the proper safety equipment.

Spyrorocks: You'll see what I can do just as soon as I can get the time to finish my emerald laser. I have a 16 page essay to write by Monday...

Re: Bad Hobbies

What brand of safety goggles do you use?

310mW.. what an odd diode. Usually diodes are rated to the nearest 50mW. With a max efficacy of 20% conversion, you will be looking at a MAX of 60mW of 532nm. Probably lower.

What wavelength is the pump diode?
