The fight between new and old spyro

TLOS really only has a large fanbase due to the fact that its the only kids game with dragons. And as i've said, I bet that TLOS wouldn't have 1% of the fanbase it has if it wasn't for the story/characters.

That's just what I've been saying! Fans of old don't like LoS for it's repulsive gameplay, and fans of new don't like the old for it's childish storyline! The story/characters are 95% of the reason I like it! It all makes you wonder why LoS wasn't a TV show... :-|

Nope, not really at all, thats what seperates Games from movies or TV shows, Games are bought for their gameplay.
SMB1 had no real storyline whatsoever and its considered to be one of the greatest games of all time.
Games like Metroid, SM64 etc are games with no or pathetic storylines but sell or have sold like hotcakes.....!

A few only play games for their storyline but i recon those people should just watch a movie

The Originals had no Storyline/ A very pathetic one: This statement FAILS....unless your talking about Spyro 1, then you'd be right! but anyway.... You know Both Spyro 2 & 3 had a storyline yeah they both involved collecting things yada yada but they DID have one, both Games had their fair share of cutscenes and humour. Not to mention every level and some situations (every minigame) had a story too. All of the main storylines justify WHY spyro is the only one that can do the job (unlike games like ETD, AHT, AOTR, SOI, SSL etc) and they give a good reason (especially Spyro 3) on why you should collect the collectables. Not to mention that Spyro 3 had a twist.

The storyline is an important part of a video game. It explains the entire thing, and what you have to do. But whats REALLY important is the gameplay. Like the graphics, the setting, the movement, and THE CHARACTER!!! Whats the point of playing a spyro game if theres no small, powerful purple dragon?

The graphics, setting, and the character (i'm not saying the moves of the character, just the character alone) is not exaculy the gameplay, the gameplay is more of the stuff you can play around with.

hmmmmm, no-one? I've never heard of a Spyro game without a small powerful purple dragon...have you?
If your implying that the original spyro wasn't "powerful" well then i'd have to disagree with you, but thats not the point, People dont always play games with characters who are "powerful" (I'm talking about psysical power now, not mental or emotional or whatever), the gams might be just fun!

OH no, no, no, no! Im not saying that the original spyro wasn't powerful. I love all Spyro games!!!
But another thing that makes games fun, like you said, is the stuff you can play around with. I HATE that, in some Spyro games, certain areas are blocked off by "invisible walls".
Why cant they let him explore? It would be fun!

hmmmmmm, well if your talking about the originals, theres 2 simple reasons:
1.Levels can only fit a certain amount of polygons/data/whatever
2.If some people drift off thety might get lost, besides some people dont even want that kind of area!

Doppel, this thread isn't meant to really achieve anything, neither is most of the threads on the site, its just to discuss, share our feelings and debate...

And as i've said, ETD and AHT are not examples of what Spyro would have been if he continued, the games are examples of companies not doing anywhere near their best with Spyro. I've already listed some ways that original spyro could have improved on and i bet if they released a game like i said, it would sell very well.

Well i thought that when you turn off the game (quit the game) thats when Spyro goes to the toilet, sleeps, eats etc but it would be a good idea if you know those parts where you are inactive, you take out a hamburger and eat or you fall asleep (i think in AHT you do that smile ), good idea though!

I think the reboot was needed after ETD and AHT. if it wasnt for those games i dont think the reboot would have happened. It happened because the critics wanted a change and alot of fans were getting sick of it as well. I agree with Ratchet, maybe they didnt have to give Spyro a whole reboot and they just could have improved him. But still, i like the reboot.

I would of liked it if TLOS was about a different Dragon, not Spyro because face it, he is nothing even LIKE the old series.

If games like ETD or AHT continued, i think i would of been as angry as i am about TLOS, and i would of defiently liked a good improvement or change
But yeah, a reboot is not an improvement or "good" change, just a chuck and BOOM! neither were AHT or ETD an improvement or good change. But the original games needed a good change or an Improvement, if a clone of Spyro 3 but with different levels were released, some people might like it, but i think people would much improve a good improvement or change, but keeping the main things of the game in tact.

Now that my computer's FINALLY LET ME LOG IN, I have made a shocking discovery... I actually played EtD, AHT, and ANB and ENJOYED THEM ALL (until ETD glitched and froze up). In my opinion, if you played a video game and enjoyed yourself, that game's done it's job, no matter how annoying Spyro sounds in AHT.

But this is a discussion about which is better, not which is fun. This heavily depends on opinion. Mine is that the old games were excellent because of the fun gameplay (yes, even the GBA games), and LoS is excellent because of the cool storyline (the gameplay was ripped straight from AHT with an added combat system, just so it could be considered a "video game").

But anyways, that's my opinion... neutral

yeah, the fact is, it doesn't really matter about anything else, as long as you enjoyed the game...shame i didn't enjoy TLOS....

Yeah, i kinda enjoy ETD but its not very playable, AHT....sometimes, but i find it a bit bland...

i guess its because i got attached to Spyro when i was very young, and unlike some people here, i dont have aspergers syndrome (i dont know if it effects attachment but, owell!)

Speak for yourself! Year of the Dragon was the FIRST VIDEO GAME I EVER PLAYED, and I still like TLoS. And by the way, I'd appreciate it if people would actually explain why they like one series better than the other, instead of just stating which they perfer. For example, you could say,"I like LoS better due to the storyline (the original storyline was stupid), andLoS feels more like the world a dragon would live in (one not infested with space cows)." But that's not really my opinion. I like all Spyro games because they're really enjoyable (excluding Fusion, but I even like that game to a small extent).
