Well, if the above is true, then I'm glad it's just speculation. Just as an off-topic question, where is Spyroforums based in? (i.e. what country's laws apply to this website?)

SR is Canadian, so I would make an educated guess its servers are in Canada.

Spyroforums is run by phpbb. I would think wherever they are located is where the rules apply.

The only way you would have to do that on here is if Spyrorocks made it a rule, which he won't.

Yes. He said he'd shut the site down before we cave in to stuff like that. smile

False. SpyroForum is using the phpBB software, however, SR owns the license. He hosts SpyroForum on a server he pays for, so I'd assume that it would be based in Canada.

False too.

phpBB is freeware. No license required. smile

The server's name is BlueHost and it is NOT in Canada according to my tracer.

[sub]Though I have no proof this is accurate, I take the tracer's results with a pinch of salt because it traced my old house correctly, and I traced myself and it was also correct.[/sub]

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

I've been saying it for years. The internet is much like the American Wild West. In the nineteenth century (1800's), there was little to no law regulating the entire midwest of America. Bandits and raiders made profits and there was little to no government control. In the late 1800's, when the American West Coast railroad connected to the American East Coast, both sides were finally united, and the United States began taking law into the Mid West.

The internet is the "Wild West" of our time. There's no laws, no rules. Anything can be broken with little to no repercussion. Yet. In a few years, world governments will begin to drastically place laws on the internet. So, enjoy the lawlessness while you can. Download/steal music and whatever else you can while you can still get away with it. This won't last forever.

I predict that once the internet is completely regulated, the next frontier that will become the "Wild West" will become outer space, once it becomes available to the common man.

*starts singing*

some people call the space cowboy, dundun dun dun dundundun dun dun

but seriously, whilst this is possible i suppose, i dont think the internet will become regulated too soon, people look at China and see how bad it is to give the government control over the internet (china censors anything they dont like on the internet, ie. bad publicity)

i think that most of the western world thinks too highly of the whole "freedom of speech" thing to bring censorship into play on the internet or force rules upon it

but then only time will really tell

I'm sure SR is laughing all the way to the bank with the Exchange Rates being so much in his favor.

The Internet can never be regulated by a government, as it is not owned by a government, unlike the Wild West.

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

hmm it can in ways, the entire internet cant be run by one government, but as i said, china have complete control over everything their people do on the internet, they have google searches monitored so that if someone types something along the lines of "overtake government" theyre heaved off to prison, as well as any media that doesnt praise china being censored completely

it is possible for governments to control what people do on the internet, but i doubt it will happen, and if it did you can bet people would find a way around it

You can't control the internet. Try to censor it, and it will keep moving more and more underground.

And im considering buying a full out server and putting it in a datacenter in my area.

Correct. Hooray for PEACEFIRE!

But servers costs thousands! Maybe cheaper if you buy parts and assemble it yourself. wink

This is from g4. It's happenening to major websites. You can't use usernames anymore, you must use your real name.

Recently, we at TheFeed were asked to cease using aliases and write our posts under our given names. After a few minutes of raucous ballyhoo and appeals to the powers-that-be, the writers of TheFeed resigned ourselves to saying goodbye to our much-beloved internet anonymity.

Soon, you may know our pain. While some would argue that this crazy virtual world of teh Internetz depends on anonymity, we all may soon find out what the 'nets will be like if everyone was suddenly held accountable for their words and virtual actions.

On May 15th, a Missouri woman was indicted on three charges of lying about who she was... to MySpace. The story leading to the accusations is long and twisted, and it begins with the death of a 13 year-old girl named Megan Meier—the girl who may change the internet forever.

God I hope this never happens. Can anyone else find any other articles on it? This one was from g4tv.com.

hmmmmmmmmm, well, that sounds awfully familiar.

Now, I'm not sure if this is the same story. But apparently, a girl was talking to a 'guy' online and got to be really good friends with him and such. The guy turned out to be a mother who was mad because that girl got into the cheer squad or something and her daughter didn't. So then the 'guy' told the girl online that she was worthless, stupid, etc. etc. after she thought she was really close to him. So then she committed suicide. And the woman was charged I believe.

I got this info from the seminar on internet safety that they had at our school. I don't know, it's just when I read that snippet, my mind went automatically to that case.

Can regular PCs can also serve as web servers with the right OS? Maybe a Pentium 4 *could* cut it.

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

A regular PC can be used as a personal webserver or for a website with a very light load, but spyroforum is hardly under light load.

Every page has to be generated on-the-fly with php. phpBB has a templating engine that also puts a load on the server, and with a few mysql queries every load and over 20 users loading pages at the same time all day, it adds up.

China does a good job of completely censoring it. It's not impossible. They can just block users in America (or whatever government that wants to censor the internet) from viewing certain websites. Never say never, Raidon.

I hope Canada will still be the same...

EDIT: SF's server is in the US so if it gets censored, we will have a problem.
