The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

This is from g4. It's happenening to major websites. You can't use usernames anymore, you must use your real name.

Recently, we at TheFeed were asked to cease using aliases and write our posts under our given names. After a few minutes of raucous ballyhoo and appeals to the powers-that-be, the writers of TheFeed resigned ourselves to saying goodbye to our much-beloved internet anonymity.

Soon, you may know our pain. While some would argue that this crazy virtual world of teh Internetz depends on anonymity, we all may soon find out what the 'nets will be like if everyone was suddenly held accountable for their words and virtual actions.

On May 15th, a Missouri woman was indicted on three charges of lying about who she was... to MySpace. The story leading to the accusations is long and twisted, and it begins with the death of a 13 year-old girl named Megan Meier—the girl who may change the internet forever.

God I hope this never happens. Can anyone else find any other articles on it? This one was from g4tv.com.

Good, this is apparently some new "law." G4's website was forced to do it.

Ok...if this is true, I may be forced to stop using the internet by my parents, they're very strict on how much info I put out.

ahhhh I love it when a law is made that makes more problems then it solves.

"Let's ban booze!"
"Ya that's a great idea!"

how does congress think this is going to go down? That everyone will be getting in line to be forced to give up personal information? Amazing how suck things can happen, kinda like banning driving because people get in crashes. [keep it shut Brom, no ranting!]

If they did this on here..I'd move to deviantART again...it just wouldn't be the same.

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

Well, now it will be easy for predators to find prey. Just google their name, find their IP Adress, track the adress to an exact location, and find what they're looking for. The Internet will be the most dangerous place in the world. Soon gangs will use it to recruit and find members if this law passes.

More like saying this:

"Let's ban breathing because it realeases too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere!"

"GREAT IDEA!!!"

...Not.

I don't think Spyroforum is considered a major website, major sites have like 100k+ members...and that includes YouTube and DeviantART.

No, their bosses asked them to do it.

Its not a law. If this woman loses this case at the Supreme Court, it would be a precedent, however that's a long way away, and not likely to happen.

This would be the death of 4chan though. Lol.

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

DeviantART would be hit too. Anyway, if it becomes a law, which if they are already making people use their real name will be soon, this site will be hit and Spyrorocks will shut it down. Then I'll sue the government for endangering my life.

Re: The Internet may Never be the Same Again.

^Yea, but I don't think they'll target this website, I mean...1500 members is considered minor in the big world of internet and having about 50k-100k members is what I would call a medium sized one, and of course, anything above 100k is a major site in my eyes. And I would love to see how many sueings the govt. would get for this law.

Council 1: "OMG!! 2 billion sueings in one day!"

Council 2: "...Did we just put this country into chaos?"

Whole Council: "Yes." *flood of sueings*

I really hope RM is right. If it was just that site, then why did they add all the extra stuff and why was it titled, "The girl who changed the internet" or something like that?

I feel guilty on knowing how to do an IP-Trace. :'(

No! I won't trace anyone because of that concern. big_smile

What I meant to say was that IP traces are only 100% accurate to the country, and your lucky if its accurate to the city.

its certainly not a bad one, but hey, everyone does it so it cant be a bad thing

ok, so banning alcohol all together isnt necessarily a good thing, partially because even i have a drink every so often (green ginger wine, warms you up) and also its used in cooking and stuff, but theres a serious problem when children of 13 and in rare cases younger are going out binge drinking

yes, it should be the responibility of the parents, but when the parents are irresponsible its time someone else stepped in

i love my country but for one thing, the australian culture pretty much promotes drinking, to not drink here gets you looks of "what the hell is wrong with you?" and im sure its like this elsewhere too

basically id have no problem with alcohol if it werent for stupid underaged people thinking theyre bodies are developped enough to handle the strain of excessive alcohol, a drink on special occasions (wedding/b'day/etc.) is one thing, but young people here seem incapable of having fun without being off their face

y'know recently there was a tax and a crackdown on the drinks most younger people were known to buy, y'know what they did? some of them have gone out buying bulk amounts of vanilla essence because its mostly alcohol, and its perfectly legal for underaged kids to buy, or at least it was

anyway, carry on, i just needed all that off my chest

ISPs are screwing with that now, mon ami. wink

This is becoming a fear fest. Seriously, its not going to happen. Anonymity on the Internet is too widespread, it would essentially be decriminalized if set as a precedent, but there's no way in HELL that this would get to the Supreme Court. If she is convicted in here county, then its merely a precedent for the county, IF EVEN. County Court Precedents =/= Nation Precedents.

Now calm down, seriously.
