Re: Thunderstorms
I am afraid of thunderstorms. Once I was home alone and the power went out, then it started hailing. I was sooooo scared and I couldn't stand it anymore. I tried to call my mom, but the phones were out. Then I saw a HUGE black swirling cloud coming near the house. It was a tornado and it touched down on my house. It wasn't so bad that it ripped the roof off or anything, but it threw some objects around like chairs, trashcans ect. I was about to go beserk, so I tried the phone again and, miraculously, it worked. I called my grandpa and when the storm died down a little bit, he came and got me to bring me to his house. My two cousins were down there also. This showed me just how powerful God can be.

I love my staffies!

Re: Thunderstorms
That will be scary. ![]()
When we had Bagyong Milenya (Typhoon Milenya) in the Philippines, it was almost a disaster. Satellite dishes and stuff were flying and I am afraid that it could hit the window and hurt someone.
When the storm died, power was out for four days. The meat in the fridge has to have ice to avoid spoilage, and the village I live in was a disaster. Power lines were brought down, trees destroyed. When we went to a field trip a week later, we saw a ginormous billboard toppled over and it crushed a house.

There was a thunderstorm a few hours ago here in New York. I wonder why thunderstorms only occur in hot weather...

I thought they only happened when the charges in the ground and in the air were unbalanced...

Re: Thunderstorms
......ok here i go....
The water droplets frreze in the cloud barly...they colide and cause their Nutrons to fling off...the nutrons on the ground build up on each o0ther to hit those nutrons. When they touch lightning is created...It could be warm weather..., but the altitude of the clouds are high enough to still freeze the water droplets. If this still is a little confusing it might be from me trying to phrase it because i got only 3 hours of sleep last night because of packing and all that other stuff to come back home.

Re: Thunderstorms
Simplified its basically happens when raindrops in the cloud rub against each other and create a charge. This shoots to the ground as lightning. Thunder is the result of the air around the lightning being super-heated really fast (lightning is as hot as the surface of the Sun). Though I think DPX is right you don't really need to know about the neutrons bit.

Also, lightning can shoot back up from the ground! ![]()
I've learnt a whole bunch of this stepped leader, charge, lightning etc. but I can't remember much now.

Re: Thunderstorms
I love thunderstorms; it makes my creative side come out. Sometimes when I'm in school and it starts storming outside I start wishing that there'd be a tornado that would come and take us all to Oz, Narnia, or some other cool place. Strange wish, probably, but you have to admit it'd be awesome if it happened!
I didn't loose it. I sold it on ebay!

Re: Thunderstorms
There was a thunderstorm a few hours ago here in New York. I wonder why thunderstorms only occur in hot weather...
Thunderstorms usually occur in hot weather because it is the rising of hot air which is one of the ways nature creates thunderstorms. When the sun warms up the ground really hot and toasty, this hot air becomes lighter than the cooler air around it, therefore it rises high up into the atmosphere (to be 'on top', if you get what I mean, because it is the lightest air, very buoyant). The hot air hits the cool air in the upper atmosphere on its way up, and clouds form (you know when you open your freezer on a hot day and all that misty cloud forms when the hot air hits the cold air that is pouring out of the freezer?). Anyway, this hot air keep rising really fast into this newly formed cloud, building the cloud rapidly until eventually you get a massive rain cloud, which can get so high that the raindrops in the upper cloud freeze into hailstones. (there are other ways that storms can form, of course).
Simplified its basically happens when raindrops in the cloud rub against each other and create a charge. This shoots to the ground as lightning
Yep you're right, that's pretty much it. Although I think it's hailstones instead of raindrops that rub (also, hail in many thunderstorms often doesn't fall, or melts before reaching ground).
What a bugger that I only get 75 gems for this long winded post. Lol ah well. Correct me if I'm wrong.
